    We need an All-Stat Formula

    As a White Sox fan, I'll admit that if AJ wins the last vote, it will be complete B.S. Don't hate on AJ because of this, don't even hate on Ozzie. It's the fans. Lets face it, the fans don't know anything.

    I was thinking that MLB should get a position specific formula for each position. For example, stolen bases would be weighted higher for centerfielders than desinated hitters.

    All I've done so far is Starting Pitchers

    Wins= +2
    Losses= -1
    Strikeout= +.1
    Walk= -.2
    Find total

    Add era and whip together and devide by 2 (mean)

    Divide the total by the era/whip

    I've done it for a few of the snubs and people we don't think deserve to get in and heres how it looks.

    Lariano- 15.14
    Schilling- 10.61
    Buerhle- 4.84
    Redman- .85

    How would you guys change my formula or what formulas would you use for other positions

    Re: We need an All-Stat Formula

    I would prolly make it just +/- one for a win/loss. I think wins and loses aren't a great way to tell how good a pitcher is, so there's no point in getting +2 for a W and minus one for an L.

    As for the fan voting, the All-Star game is suppose to be the fans' game and they should get to select who they want to see - for starters. I think a formula would be a solid idea for selecting the reserves though.

      Every year someone is left off that should have been on.

      No matter what formula is generated, what reasons we make, or how the voting is changed, people will make all-star selections something to talk about till the end of time.

      It is what it is.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

        Any formula that takes into consideration won-loss record is bunk.

          Maybe substitute Wins and losses with Quality Starts?

            For position players im thinking

            [(AVE + OBP) x Fielding %] x
            (Total Bases(add BB as 1 TB and subtract K's as 1 TB) X .1 x SLG%) x ((RBI+R)/2) x .1

            I cant find any fielding % stats anywhere but i think this is good.

              This is kinda pointless because the all-star game is mostly based on popularity

                I like your effort to make a working formula. With that said, there is only one, simple formula needed:

                The most productive players shall make the team.
