Previews:

First look at All Star Baseball 2004. (IGN PS2)

"The introduction of online play for both PS2 and Xbox owners represents a first for Acclaim. All of the online gameplay will be head to head between two consoles but there are plans to make plenty of content available for download. At this point, players will definitely be able to download roster updates and statistics, but there are discussions of integrating content from This Week in Baseball and real-time weather conditions into your franchise. Awards and features like "Who's Hot/Who's Not" are already in the game in franchise mode, but there's potential for players to have real life standings, TWIB news and awards downloaded into their franchise. "

First Impressions of ASB 2004. (IGN PS2)

"As for gameplay, currently it's a lot like last year. The biggest change comes in the interface. You still hit the same buttons to swing, bunt, steal, and field, but the batting cursor has been visually altered. It's still the same triangle shape as before, just with a different outline. Bunting is more unique, though. Instead of aiming the cursor when you go to bunt, a large arrow points on the ground. Aim your bunt in the desired direction and hope for the best."

Another First Look from IGN Xbox.

All Star Baseball 2004 Details from GameSpot.

    Preview from PSX Extreme.

"In terms of graphics and gameplay, the game does exhibit many of its previous features. There isn't too large of an overhaul, with basic functions being the same and visuals shown in similar fashion. There are more noticeable shadowing techniques, but that is about it for graphics. As you'd expect, the button layout has stayed the same; however, there are a different variety of cursors during fielding and batting that allow for more variation. Player animations are roughly identical, with a few tweaks here and there that aren't too noticeable. Sadly, it appears Acclaim has spent the most time on presentation, which although it is well received, I would've liked to seen a few more gameplay alterations to improve upon last year."

High Heat 2004 IGN Hands On.

"And yet there's even more to talk about: like the improved trading A.I that allows for uneven player swaps and provides an increased sensibility when negotiating (which you can turn on and off at your leisure). Or how about the fact that the console versions now sport the franchise mode that its PC cousin has been sporting for years? And let's not forget the new budget point system that keeps your club within certain cap points (just like World Series), or the myriad of other bonus features like the player editor and varying difficulty settings. 3DO has gone all out this year, and it shows."

GameSpy High Heat Major League Baseball 2004 Preview:

"If, for whatever reason, you're not happy with one small aspect of High Heat's gameplay, 20 tuning sliders will be present to tweak different parts of the game, such as fatigue, injury frequency, pitch speeds, and error frequency. When talking about the subject, however, the developers were quick to point out that these sliders aren't intended as a shortcut allowing them to bypass balancing the gameplay. It's obvious that the entire team feels they're building the best baseball sim in the world, and the sliders are an extra way to make sure gamers get exactly what they want out of the game. (An arcade setting will be included as well.)"

      Previews:

      Hands on at IGN.

"The biggest change, and perhaps the biggest gamble, was the addition of a power swing. You have three separate swing buttons now. Separate buttons for bunting, contact, and power. Contact swings work the same as last year. You aim the batting cursor, try to get the meat of the bat on the ball, and swing at the right time. Bunting is similar to before, where you hold down the bunt button and aim at the ball, but you can now also drag bunt. Simply bunt right before the ball reaches the plate and you'll try and bunt for a hit. The power swing is, so we're told, really the only way to hit home runs. Your contact zone shrinks based on your power ratings, but you gain a lot of pop in your bat. You can't check swings with a power swing, so it's an all or nothing proposition. You also have a better chance of popping up or hitting the ball poorly. So choose your swing wisely."

      Preview from GamingWorld X.

"Last year WSB was only available for Xbox, leaving a sour taste in PS2 owner&amp;#8217;s mouths, but thankfully for those select people a PS2 version will be presented. Last year&amp;#8217;s edition lacked a jump button, which really, well, pissed off gamers beyond belief. Visual Concepts is introducing the jump button to make catches at the wall and other catches that could be made by jumping (go figure). While to most baseball fans this feature may sound not that big of a deal, but when you go a year without the jump button, it begins to take its toll."

        Fact Sheet PS2

        Fact sheet Xbox

OPERATION SPORTS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PRODUCER BRENT NIELSEN AND GAME DESIGNER JASON LEIGH.

        FEATURES

        <ul type="square"> [*]New Pitcher/Batter Interface:

PITCHING -- players must be strategic with their pitches. Throw a nasty curve to a batter’s “cold zone” or risk a possible home run by throwing some heat to their “hot zone.” Each pitcher will have more effective pitches depending on how accurate those pitches are in real life.
BATTING -- the quality of the hit will depend on each batter’s real life “hot and cold zones,” hitter ratings, swing timing and swing type.
        [*]New AI and Gameplay System:

Real-time scouting reports provide accurate player ratings and attributes. CPU opponents react like their real-life counterparts, incorporating strategy and decision-making based on outs, score, inning, pitch count, etc.
        [*]First Ever Picture-in-Picture Baserunning:

Revolutionary new picture-in-picture baserunning puts the offensive player right in the middle of the action even after the ball has left the bat. Control of the baserunners allows players to visibly determine whether or not to go for third base on a single to the outfield. On-base views let pitchers keep runners close to the bag.
        [*]Robust Franchise Mode:

Includes rookie drafts, player development, career-ending injuries, contracts and hirings/firings.
        [*]Realistic player models and animations:

Multiple body types, player accessories and new head scans -- MLB® players look and feel like their real-life counterparts.
        [*]All-New Throw Meter:

Brings risk and reward into defensive play -- hold down the throw button longer for harder, higher-risk toss. A quick tap of the button will execute a throw with less speed and more accuracy.
[*]Major League Baseball® Player Council: Expert advice and design input from leading MLB players Torii Hunter, Trot Nixon, Todd Pratt, Eric Chavez and Tim Hudson.
        [*]Expert Broadcasting:

Play-by-play and color commentary from San Francisco Giants announcers Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow.
Previews:

MVP Baseball 2003 Hands On from IGN.

"Perhaps the greatest innovation in MVP Baseball, and one we're sure will find its way over to other sports games both EA and otherwise, is the momentum meter. On the surface, the momentum meter is way to measure how well you're team is doing for the purpose of simulating games you don't want to play. If your team is hot and the other isn't, go ahead and sim it since you'll likely pick up the win. However, the reality is, the momentum meter is a dynamic way of measuring how well you're managing your baseball team since everything you do affects this momentum. And when we say everything, we mean lineups, batting order, how well you play in big games (more on that in a minute) and how well you do in intervention games."

          989 SPORTS MLB 2004

          Operation Sports Preview.

OPRATION SPORTS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PRODUCER CHRIS GILL.

          FEATURES

<ul type="square"> [*]Total Control Pitching. Total Control Pitching is an MLB 2004 exclusive feature, putting gamers on the pitcher's mound determining pitch type, location, and velocity. In addition, scalable strike zones provide a true strike zone in proportion to each individual hitter. [*]Total Control Batting. Another MLB 2004 exclusive, Total Control Batting lets gamers decide to hit for contact or power. Then, users can attempt to out think pitchers by guessing pitch type and location. Guess right, and the all-new batting cursor will have a huge sweet spot giving hitters a better chance to hit one out. Guess wrong, and it's a long walk back to the dugout to pull up a piece of pine. [*]Hot and Cold Streaks. Start stringing together some hits and watch your batting cursor increase in both size and power. But, if you start struggling at the plate, the cursor becomes smaller, and you'll have to battle your way out of your slump. These streaks and slumps will also affect the attributes associated to that player. [*]Mound Charging. If you're a victim of a bean ball, you have the option of charging the mound. But, be aware of the consequences for your actions. You can be sure to expect an early trip to the showers, and you may have to deal with a league-imposed suspension. [*]Total Control Fielding. Become a gold glover by making barehanded grabs, throwing on the run, climbing the wall, and making diving catches. A new feature this year allows gamers to position each fielder exactly where you want them without affecting the entire defense. [*]Managerial Control. Strategy is a huge part of baseball, and it is key to your success in MLB 2004. Managers can use in game scouting reports to determine pitch outs, double switches, and bullpen activity. Make the wrong move, or tire out a reliever by warming him up too long, and you'll have a lot of questions to answer after the game. [*]Authentic Stadium Recreations. All 30 ballparks have been recreated in intricate detail, including authentic sponsor signage, city-specific weather effects, animated crowds and umpires, and real time JumboTrons. [*]Realistic Player Models and Animations. From faces taken directly from head scans from every Major League Player to accurate skin tone, facial hair, and body style, MLB 2004 provides the most authentic player models available. Even the players shadows are scaled to his body type. In addition, more than 1,500 personalized animations have been captured giving the game an unparalleled authenticity. [*]Innovative and Exciting Game Modes. With more than 10 modes of gameplay, MLB 2004 delivers the deepest baseball game ever produced. Career Mode allows gamers to create a player and attempt to turn him from a no-name rookie into a Hall-of-Famer. General Manager Mode allows players to take control of the front office of a professional team and attempt to make the necessary trades and signings to build a World Series Champion. Add in other options such as Season Mode, Home Run Derby Mode, and Exhibition Mode, and baseball fans will have an endless supply of gaming options. [*]Enhanced Artificial Intelligence. Incorporating input from numerous Major League All-Stars including Shawn Green, Troy Glaus, Trevor Hoffman, Tony Gwynn, and Roger Clemens, MLB 2004 offers the most authentic AI ever developed in a baseball game. All facets of the game from hitting and baserunning to pitching and defense have been developed to provide a true-to-life baseball simulation. [*]TV-Style Presentation. Utilizing input from major network producers, MLB 2004 incorporates dozens of camera angles, replays, and play-by-play and commentary from Hall-of-Famer Vin Scully and ESPN's Dave Cambell to bring live baseball action to PlayStation 2.[*]More than 100 Statistical Categories. Baseball is a game of stats, and MLB 2004 tracks both individual and team statistics as gamers attempt to win authentic Major League trophies such as the Silver Slugger, Cy Young, and MVP.
Previews and Interviews:

          Preview from PSX Extreme.

"Gameplay-wise, MLB 2004 is also shaping up nicely, with customizable and dynamic ways to pitch and bat. As a pitcher, you can take full advantage and exploit the batters&amp;#8217; weaknesses with the "Total Control Pitching", which lets you control all different aspects of a pitch quickly and effectively. Likewise, batting has a similar type of set-up so that the batters will have equal fairness at the plate. If just by some chance the batter gets belted by a pitch, he can lose his temper and charge the pitching mound like a mad bull, letting the two settle the score hockey-style. Of course, while this is an added aspect for entertainment, it&amp;#8217;s also a good addition, and is a reality of the sport."

          Preview from GameSpy.

"Visually the game is shaping up nicely. The stadium models are accurate, right down to each park's celebration. When a homerun is hit, fireworks will go off in Edison Field or the big apple in the top hat will make an appearance at Shea Stadium. Player models contain 4,000 to 5,000 polygons each. 989 is quick to tout its animation system. For example, of the 110 windups and stretches assigned to the game's pitchers, there are seven individual animations in each delivery. While baseball games aren't known for blowing players away with 5.1 Surround Sound, commentary is an important aural element. MLB 2004's commentary is brought to you by hall-of-famer Vin Scully and ESPN's Dave "Soup" Campbell. While I never really got into Scully's style, I'm a big fan of Soup and am glad to hear his pipes as I play."

          Preview from IGN.

"If career mode isn't your cup of tea, there's a planned 11 more different types of play. Franchise, season, exhibition, and general manager modes name but a few, with the latter in particular allowing for powerful customizations. Free Agent pools, college and high school drafts, trades, and all manner of club-specific details can be tooled with, tweaked, or changed with the flick of a button. The only feature that seems to be missing is the confirmation of some kind of online play (and let's face it, 989's NFL GameDay had one of the best online models we saw this year), but it's an option that hasn't entirely been ruled out either. We can only cross our fingers in that regard."
