IYO, what is the most important stat in baseball?
For batters and pitchers. You see batting aaverages being tossed around as well as ERA numbers, what do you feel is the most important stat if you were to analize a player?http://neverfollow.biz (Independent Music Group)Tags: None -

you dont win games by getting more hits or giving up less hits then the opposition.
therefor the best stat is
hitters- Runs/RBI's
pitchers- eraComment

Re: IYO, what is the most important stat in baseball?
Everystat has flaws BUT batting average is a proven stat that has been the staple for hitters.
As for pitchers, ERA is good with starting pitchers BUT with relievers the stat definately gets inflated. There can be a reliever with a low ERA but he could be allowing the inherited runners to come in to score. The best stat I think would be good for picther is also batting average BUT batting average allowed.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XComment

Adjusted OPS and ERA. Or, if you want to compare them to their peers, OPS+ and ERA+.
Or, if you want to get really detailed, VORP.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Equivalent Average. A measure of total offensive value per out, with corrections for league offensive level, home park, and team pitching. EQA considers batting as well as baserunning, but not the value of a position player's defense. The EqA adjusted for all-time also has a correction for league difficulty. The scale is deliberately set to approximate that of batting average. League average EqA is always equal to .260. EqA is derived from Raw EqA, which is (H + TB + 1.5*(BB + HBP + SB) + SH + SF) divided by (AB + BB + HBP + SH + SF + CS + SB). REqA is then normalized to account for league difficulty and scale to create EqA.
Defense-adjusted ERA. Not to be confused with Voros McCracken's Defense-Neutral ERA. Based on the PRAA, DERA is intended to be a defense-independent version of the NRA. As with that statistic, 4.50 is average. Note that if DERA is higher than NRA, you can safely assume he pitched in front of an above-average defense.Comment
