No it isn't. Some managers will go the tit-for-tat route. You throw up and in at my batter, I'll reply in kind. If you HIT my batter, I'll hit one of yours in kind.
If you're aware of the mindset and thought process behind SOME beanball wars, you will know that SOMETIMES...a manager will tell his pitcher...in ABSOLUTELY no uncertain terms...to hit an opposing batter...period. Regardless of what the fans think, the media thinks and so-called purists think.
When you're told in explicit terms to do so, you do what your manager asks you, or you may deal with his wrath...like Garland did and the Chisox rookie did last month...and in a little more subtle way, like Shawn Estes did by throwing BEHIND Roger Clemens a few years back.
Sometimes it's an unspoken thing for a pitcher to KNOW when the right time is to hit an opposing batter in order to protect his teammate. Most times when pitchers are instructed to hit an opposing batter though, no one even has a clue. We all only can surmise. But Ozzie does not hide his feelings, so thats why a lot of folks are getting their underwear tight over this. It's been going on for a long time. If Ozzie wasn't so demonstrative, no one would be talking about it.
You WILL see this kind of thing again before the season ends. And you should know that it does NOT have to be Ozzie involved either.
