Who has claimed Andruw Jones game?

Ok first person to correctly name the team that has claimed Andruw Jones off waivers, wins a cookie. The team has not been announced yet, but it has been reported that Andruw Jones was picked up.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2539544

    My guess.. White Sox.

Why? We didn't do anything prior to the deadline, and our offense is still struggling. We have prospects that would look mighty good to Atlanta. Josh Fields, Brian Anderson, possibly even Brandon McCarthy (but Id rather keep him) maybe we'll give up Javier Vasquez or Freddie Garcia.

I believe the team highest on the priority list gets the claim, so it probably wasn't the White Sox.

Re: Who has claimed Andruw Jones game?

I would love to say the Tigers, even though I know it isn't (Not saying they didn't place a claim, but they weren't awarded the claim). Logic says probably the Nationals or Pirates.

        (From ESPN)
        Waivers
Waivers just might be the most complicated single aspect of the rules. In the rule book, a waiver is defined as "... a permission granted for certain assignments of player contracts or for the unconditional release of a Major League player ..."

If a player placed on Major League waivers is not claimed by another team during the three business days after waivers have been requested, then the players is said to have "cleared waivers," and the team has secured waivers for the remainder of the waiver period.

And what does that mean? Essentially, the team can do with the player's contract as it pleases. This generally means one of three things:

        (1) They can send him to the minors (subject to his consent, if he's a "Veteran Player," more on that below).

        (2) They can release him, which makes the player a free agent and thus available to sign with any team.

        (3) They can trade him to another team, even if the so-called "trading deadline" has passed. Any trades made after July 31 may only involve players who have cleared waivers.

If a player doesn't clear waivers -- in other words, if he's claimed by another team or teams -- the club requesting waivers may withdraw the waiver request.

If the club doesn't withdraw the waiver request, the player's contract is assigned in the following manner:

        (A) If only one claim is entered, the player's contract is assigned to that claiming club.

        (B) If more than one club in the same league makes claims, the club currently lower in the standings gets the player.

        (C) If clubs in both leagues claim the player, preference shall always go to the club in the same league as the club requesting waivers.

There are other, more esoteric rules involved here. For example, during the first 30 days of the season, the previous season's final standings are used to determine claim order, rather than the current standings.
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. Good post Kelvarr. When I heard Gammons say last year that pretty much everybody gets put on waivers to see if they'll slip through, that's when I realized how complicated the whole process was.

Throw in the Rule 5 draft, and baseball wins hands down as the most complicated sport out there!

Well, since six teams put a claim on him then you can automatically eliminate the top five teams in baseball. My guess is either the Astros or Dodgers.

If the Dodgers pick up Andruw Jones I believe they would automatically become the wild-card favorite.

Couldn't Atlanta pull Jones back? That's what I thought I heard on the radio because it's some special sort of waiver.

The Astros are higher on the pecking order, have a need for him, and are still in the WC race. Add to it that they apparently had a deal in place to acquire Jones via another team and it would make the most sense that their claim was the successful one.

Making the most sense and being what actually happens is so totally different in Major League Baseball.

why would the braves do this? isnt he still one of the top players in the league? i mean, sure they suck this yr, but why dont they want them for next yr...

and lets say a team like the pirates claims him.. do the braves then trade him to the pirates or just let him go?

They're doing this because it's highly unlikely Jones, who is a FA at the end of the season, will be back anyway.

Yes, they can pull him back but the thought is that he becomes a 10/5 player on August 15th and this might be an indicator that they may have wanted to trade him prior to that. His stock is pretty high right now because he is signed through next season at a reasonable salary considering the market. In other words, it is the perfect time to trade him, especially if Atlanta is resigned to the fact they are out of the race and should start to rebuild.
