What the heck is going on with the L.A. Dodgers?

Just 2 weeks ago, the Dodgers were mired in last place in the NL west, were 1-13 since the All-Star break, and suffered chemistry breakdown in the dugout with Penny confronting Lofton.

Then they sweep Washington, sweep the 6-game road trip against the Reds and Marlins, and with a win today against Colorado, made it 10 wins in a row. The Dodgers are tied for 1st in the Wild Card now, and gained alot of ground from San Diego in the NL West.

The trade deadline came around and Colletti added pieces, (Maddux pitched 6 no-hit innings), (Betemit and Lugo have produced nicely), and from what I'm seeing, it looks like they could run away with this division.

With Kent and Garciaparra returning to the lineup, the young talent in this lineup, and the pitching rotation throwing great as of late, I think this team is prone for a postseason run granted they get that far.

I don't know about a "postseason run", but it looks like they are headed to the playoffs. Whether its WC or by winning the West remains to be seen. But remember, there is still a lot of baseball left to be played.

But they do have a lot of things going for them. As you said, Maddux was great and he will be good down the stretch. Betemit and Lugo provide great depth in the infield.

Kent and Garciaparra return, and they just got back Brett Tomko. Remember, they also added Mark Hendrickson a little while ago, and he has been pitching better as of late. Plus, while unlikely, I heard they might be getting Bill Mueller back in time for the post-season, (but I don't even know if he would be worthy of a roster spot).

The Dodgers are in good shape.

On another note, Andre Ethier could be NL ROTY. He leads all rookies in BA/OBP/SLG. (.350/.399/.564)

Hopefully the Dodgers don't go through this run and make the playoffs then go into a funk when it matters the most.

            That's my only concern.

Vin Scully had mentioned during last nights game that Dodgers had put together streaks like this before, in 1993 and again in 1999 and in both seasons the Dodgers failed to make the playoffs.

It's going to be interesting to see how long they can keep this going. After their series with the Rockies is over the Dodgers have a stretch where they play 9 of their next 12 games against the Giants and Padres. The Dodgers are 5-5 against the Giants this year and 3-8 against the Padres.

                  What happened?

They play in a weak division. The Dodgers should be the NL West winners come October.

Except the winning streak came against non-divisional opponents....Washington, Florida, and Cincinnati.

And their terrible record still has them in the hunt to win the division because their division is weak.

Not many would have cared about their winning streak if they were 12 games out.

What division in the NL isn't weak? What you said can apply to both the NL West and NL Central.

The Dodgers are a bit more than your average NL West team and it's completely irrelvant to compare them to the struggling Dodger's you saw in late July, or any other month.

I believe the Dodgers are playing to their true form as of now, as evidenced by the impact the recent acquisitions have had (Maddux, Lugo, Betemit).

I know what you are saying. I agree that the Dodgers have improved.

I'm merely stating that if they had played in the Central or East it would not have mattered. Despite how weak the Central and East is, it is not nearly as weak as the West. The Dodgers would still be having a tough time competing with the Cardinals in the Central (I'll give the Reds a bit of a nudge just so Cincy fans don't complain), and a terrible time with the Mets and Phillies in the East.

Honestly, the teams in the West almost shouldn't be fighting for a playoff spot, but MLB now has a three division setup so that's unavoidable.

The Dodgers are currently 17-10 against the NL East and 15-14 against the NL Central. Hardly the case.

Read what I stated above. I'll also mention the fact that the Dodgers swept the Reds at Cincinnati by VERY comfortable margins.

The "The NL West is an inferior division" argument is pure BS and the stats do not bear you out.
