Loria is talked out of firing Girardi

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2547478

I'm not sure how believable this is. Joe cursed off his owner? Then Loria makes the decision to fire him right then and there? It would've been stupid to fire him though. Good thing they didn't, he's done a great job.

That sounds like something a younger George Steinbrenner would've done. I like what Girardi is doing in Florida and if the ownership is patient I bet they'll have some very good success in a few years.

Loria's a putz and should not be allowed to own a Major League Baseball team, he ruined one (the Expos) and will probably ruin the Marlins beyond repair (like the Expos) before he decides to sell them and screw up another team.

"They stopped and thought about this, that it would be a public relations nightmare if the resurging Florida Marlins were to have fired a man who turned them around," a source told the newspaper.

        <!--end leftcol -->
Loria shoulda went ahead and did it, and screw himself in the process... There are probably at least 6-8 other teams who would gladly dump their current manager and hire Girardi.

I wonder if Girardi will come back next year. It's gotta be an awkward situation, having the owner basically own you in front of your team. I'd be quietly angling for another gig.

Haha sounds like something I'd do if I owned a team. But then I'd get over it.

Firing Girardi now would have been right up there with trading Willis or Cabrera during the offseason in terms of PR disasters.

I absolutely cannot stand Loria. This dick should not be allowed to own an MLB team.

if he fired him it would have been the dumbest front office move all year.

Everyone is right, there is no way Loria should be allowed to own a pro team.

Damn.. I really wish he did get fired. I would love for him to come to Chicago and take over Dumba$$ Dusty job.

Actually, from what I've read lately, its that the Cubs aren't interested in him. In fact, the rumor is Girardi is a "my way or the highway" guy and is somewhat tough to work with.

Thats no surprise. They're willing to overpay for a manager that does nothing in the clubhouse or during games. But they dont want somebody that actually controls their team, instead of their team or superstars controlling them. (ie Sosa)

I knew Girardi would turn out to be a good manager, even when he was on the Cubs. I always imagined him being a Cubs manager later on in his career. Too bad the Tribune Co. doesnt know talent when it hits em right in the face.

And honestly, I don't see anything wrong with the "my way or the highway" philosphy. Too many players nowadays are spoiled brats. Girardi has taken a team, that less than 8 months ago was labeled as a joke for all their fire sale into an actual contending team.

If the Cubs say they aren't interested than about a dozen other teams will have moved up a spot in the line.

I say give the man a chance, this is his first year as manager, and his the Marlins are not built to be a team that is a contender now, but a team that should be god in the future. Remeber after 97? Don't you see a trend there?

No, because they bought their championship in '97. I think you may have meant 2003, that team featured a lot of homegrown players.

I dont get what you mean by give the man a chance. The last thing he would be fired for is performance. He has at least a dozen more wins now than anyone would have predicted.

That is what I mean, I thought he would not win more than 50 games, maybe 60, but the man has done a pretty good job with that team.

Oh, and by the way, that is what I meant, what I tried to say was something about the firesale they had etween 97 and 99, and they grew prospects to get to the top in 03. I tried to say that they are repeating that method to see if they can grow their prospects into a championship team.
