    Trade Deadline, WTF For??

I'm wondering why the trade deadline was such a humongous deal weeks ago when trading is still going on. What is the freaking rule on trading after the deadline? It's like this sport is the only sport that just ain't on the same page. I don't know. Someone break it down for me quick please.

    It's kind of complicated...

July 31st is the non-waiver deadline, players can be traded freely between teams.

Players traded after July 31st (up until the Aug. 31 deadline) must first pass through waivers. If a player clears waivers, they can be traded to any team. If they're claimed, they can either be traded to the claiming team, granted to the claiming team, or the waiver can be revoked.

Someone can probably explain it better than me, but it's basically just a lot easier to make significant deals before the July 31 deadline.

      That's pretty much it.

One of the reasons it's easier (I believe) to make deals before the deadline is for teams like the Nats and other teams that were looking to get prime level prospects for their superstar player in their last year, is because prime prospects would never clear waivers.

Players like Shawn Green can clear waivers because of his large contract, teams wouldn't want to take on his price, that's why he's a Met.

Most prime prospects wouldn't have to clear waivers unless they were on the 40-man roster.

Chances are most prospects have less than three years pro experience and wouldn't be eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, so therefore wouldn't be on a team's 40 man roster.

Since they wouldn't be on the 40 man, they don't have to clear waivers to be traded after July 31st.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
