Sportscenter anchors need to shut up

Does anyone else agree the Sportscenter anchors should stick with summarizing games and stay away from analysis / personal opinions? I just saw Scott Van Pelt do the Cards Mets game, where Mulder was lit up for 9 runs in 3 innings. Van Pelt says something to the effect of, "Mulder has always been great, but for some reason he's been an anomoly this year."

Mulder hurt his knee several years ago, which is why the A's dumped the now-average starter. You'd at least think Van Pelt would know when and why Mulder stopped being a good pitcher, but no. I guess you shouldn't except that from these morons.

Specifically, Van Pelt should stick with Golf analysis, in the least, and when hosting Sportscenter, just say what's on the screen. I've heard these nonsensical blurbs from other anchors before, but this one hit a nerve.

    Anyways, rant over.

Well to be honest with you that's not THAT bad of an asside from Van Pelt. Mulder has been very average in STL but this year he's totally bottomed out so it's not all that inaccurate to make the comments that he made.

He hadn't bottomed out yet, I agree there. But to act clueless as to why he's pitching poorly - oooh I really wish we had the old Sportscenter.

And yeah, ESPN has turned into garbage, mostly.

Haha Vince, every day's a bad day, and I'm not even employed. lol

Why do people still watch SportsCenter?

Change the channel to ESPN News and never go back.

He was slightly better than average and entirely inconsistant. He'd go from going toe-to-toe and beating Clemens 1-0 and then give up like 7 runs his next outing.

Mulder was certainly better in '05 than he was overall in '04 in OAK, but he was not the pitcher that had 15 or so wins at the all-star break in OAK before he injured himself.

Mulder also had a bad hip to go along with the irritated knee from torque in his delivery.

I don't have ESPN News - never have.

PTI jumped the shark about two years ago. Sad, but true. It's still a decent program (a lot better than most of what ESPN shows), but it's more about being loud and obnoxious than providing input or observation.

ESPN has a gold mine with Outside the Lines. Intelligent idea to have that program run every day. Unless a different guy hosts the show, I can't see it falling off like Around the Horn (that show jumped the shark the minute Stat Boy jumped on).

I've seen a few episodes of OTL and that is indeed some very intelligent programming which is a surprise considering the network it's on. The thing is, I think they chopped the show down from a 1 hour format to 20 minutes so even if they wanted to really dig into an issue in the sports world it's going to be a bit superficial.

Bob Ley is an excellent host tho and I enjoy his interviewing style and such. One thing I would change is that I would make OTL a weekly show. Sure, that would mean some of the issues would be "old" news by the time they get to it but it would allow for better researching and context rather then reactionary reporting.

OTL was a weekly show about three weeks ago.

I like to believe that ESPN turned it into a daily show because it realizes that it's daily programming is turning into garbage. OTL is all they have and they need to have some daily credibility on a news channel dedicated to sports.
