What does the past 20 years have to do with 2006? Heck, most of these players were in diapers.Comment

Re: Mets have the best top 5 in baseball
For those that don't want to read the article.
The Mets top five is: Reyes, LoDuca, Beltran, Delgado, and Wright.
That's a very strong top five. Hard to argue against it.
Only the Yankees come close (nice to have a huge payroll, huh NY).
1. It can be argued that Reyes is having a better season than Jeter. Yet, Jeter gets MVP talk and Reyes doesn't. Why?
2. LoDuca and Posada are two different types of catchers, but one clear advantage LoDuca has is defense. I'd take defense over power in the catching position, but it's all on preference.
3. Beltran and Damon. Beltran is the power-3/4 hitter. Damon is a contact, speedy table-setter. I think it's a push because they both do what they are supposed to do.
4. Wright and Rodriguez. I'll defend Rodriguez for his entire career because he is cleary (to me) the best player in baseball. But, Wright is catching up quick and this year proves it.
5. Delgado and Giambi both can't hit for average. But, both hit for power and get-on base while playing crap 1st base defense.
If these two teams meet in the WS, it's gonna come down to pitching."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

a reason I think is that, for one, most of the sports reporters always use the Beltran/Pujols/Howard trifecta that they probably overlook what Reyes has done. The other reason is that Jeter was in contention for the bating title and over a stretch of games earlier in the year either had a clutch hit or did something defensively that saved games for the Yanks...Comment

But, maybe that's because you are a Mets fan.
I think Reyes should get serious MVP consideration. And I'm being 100% serious. The man's stats are insane when you look at them.
.298 Average, .351 OBP, .839 OPS
15 HR, 66 RBI, 107 Runs
24 2B, 16 3B, 54 SB
I'm not saying he should win the MVP. But, he should definitely get a vote or two."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Mets have the best top 5 in baseball
I'd take the Yankees top 5, its not really a contest in my opinion. Just going down the order:
Damon (.890 OPS) is either the best or second best lead-off hitter in the game (its a toss-up between him and Ichiro). Reyes (.839) is having a breakout season, but Damon sees more pitches, gets on more, and hits for more power and a better average. The only thing Reyes does better is run the bases.
Jeter (.893) is better than Lo Duca (.778) at the plate. I don't feel like I need to explain that. And even though its irrelevant, I'd say Posada is having a better year behind the plate than Lo Duca. Posada should get the Gold Glove.
I'd take Beltran (1.020) over Abreu (.986 with NY, .861 with PHI), but Abreu has been huge for the Yankees.
Giambi (1.013) is a better power hitter than Delgado (.914), and he has better at-bats.
I'm a huge David Wright (.880) fan, but Arod (.872) still has the nod over him at least at the plate.
Yeah, the Mets have a nice top 5, but I think whoever says they clearly have the best are a bit delusional. If the White Sox had any sort of presense at the lead-off position they'd be in this discussion too. And it's worth pointing out that the top 5 for the Yankees and Mets is comparable, the bottom of the order is not. The Yankees blow everyone away 6-9. The Mets don't have a potent bat after Wright (yes I know Valentin has been a surprise at the bottom of the Mets order but I'm not a Jose Valentin believer, sorry).Comment
