Oswalt's extension includes an option for a sixth year and a full no-trade provision. He'll receive $13 million in both 2007 and '08, $14 million in 2009, $15 million in 2010 and $16 million in 2011. The option year is for $16 million, while there is a $2 million buyout.Tags: None -
Re: Oswalt Inks 5-year, $73 Million Extension
I'm a bit surprised.
A contract extension just before September. I'm happy for Oswalt (he deserves it). But, don't most players avoid this sort of thing in the middle of a playoff chase?
Do the Astros think they're out of it? I know it's a crazy question. I'm just asking to ask. Not really looking for an answer."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

As a player i'd like to think I could get a deal done during the season. I mean it's not like i'm personally sitting there with the GM.
Good for Oswalt and it looks like he'll be the anchor for that staff for years to come.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Oswalt Inks 5-year, $73 Million Extension
That's a pretty huge sum of money to give a guy who has had his K rate steadily decline and his BAA rise.
I'm gonna say this contract will be an albatross of huge proportions in two or three years.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment
