When will Batting Average be replaced on stat overlays by OBP?

I know it wouldnt appeal to most casual fans... but the three big stat categories of BA, HR's and RBI's needs to go. When is OBP (or OPS at least) going to be a mainstay?

The hitter's objective is to not make an out. A hitters OBP is a representation of how well he does at not making an out. Giambi this year is hitting something like .260 and everyones saying how awful of an average hitter hes become. Well his OBP is around .400. The saying "a walk is as good as a hit" really is true. If every walk he had was a single, he'd be thought of as the best hitter in the league. If you didnt watch his AB's until he got to first base, you wouldnt know how he got there...just that he's on first base. In some ways a walk is better than a single because usually the pitcher throws more pitches.

But then some people wll argue that OBP isnt such a great stat because you cant win games with guys just advancing one base at a time. OPS seriously needs to be the most mainstream stat because it really does tell te best story as to how good a hitter is at not making an out, along with how well he can advance runners and/or move into scoring position himself.

I'm sick of Runs being an "important" stat when its so dependent on others. Damon might score 110 runs this year. If he had the same OPS on another team, he would have no where near as many runs. It just seems stupid to me..thats all.

    Um....

Do you not watch ESPN they've had .OBP on their stat overlays for a while now. Same goes for most of the regional sports nets.

I'm nost sure but I don't think FOX puts .OBP on their overlays tho.

Never, unfortunately. Those big three will always make the casual fan moist.

While I agree that OPS (and what makes it: OBP and SLG) is indeed very important, I wouldn't totally discredit RBI and Runs.

yes, RBI (I know you didn't mention this, but if you hate Runs then you have to hate RBI) and Runs are dependent on the team you play on, but it still requires some ability to accumulate.

Good power hitters always have a bunch of RBI. Bad power hitters don't. I can't remember a bad hitter having over 100 RBI. I also can't remember a bad hitter scoring 100 runs.

So, while they may be overvalued, they aren't stupid.

XBH, BB, and OPS are stats I look at.

Batting Average is nice... until you realize that the players BA is similar to his SLG and his SLG is lower than his OBP (Sean Burroughs anyone?)

You know, it's funny this has come up because earlier today I was listening to the radio and basically a lot of callers were saying that stats have become too esoteric for the average fan.

I tend to agree with this. I mean WHIP and .OPS and other such stats are pretty damn complicated. I can live with .OBP tho as it's pretty straightforward.

People like simplicity. Avg/HR/RBI are simple because they are straightforward and easy to calculate and it's what a fan knows from childhood.

All of the new stats take thinking and some addition and subtraction to figure out. I can understand why people don't want to go through all that, but to me if the stat is harder to figure out then it's probably because it tells you more.

How is OPS complicated and OBP straightforward? OPS = OBP + SLG.

Not trying to pile on ya here but all WHIP is is walks given up plus hits given up divided by innings pitched.
