The hitter's objective is to not make an out. A hitters OBP is a representation of how well he does at not making an out. Giambi this year is hitting something like .260 and everyones saying how awful of an average hitter hes become. Well his OBP is around .400. The saying "a walk is as good as a hit" really is true. If every walk he had was a single, he'd be thought of as the best hitter in the league. If you didnt watch his AB's until he got to first base, you wouldnt know how he got there...just that he's on first base. In some ways a walk is better than a single because usually the pitcher throws more pitches.
But then some people wll argue that OBP isnt such a great stat because you cant win games with guys just advancing one base at a time. OPS seriously needs to be the most mainstream stat because it really does tell te best story as to how good a hitter is at not making an out, along with how well he can advance runners and/or move into scoring position himself.
I'm sick of Runs being an "important" stat when its so dependent on others. Damon might score 110 runs this year. If he had the same OPS on another team, he would have no where near as many runs. It just seems stupid to me..thats all.
