Re: Chris Young - No Hitter Through 7

Nice to see Baseball Tonight give a little air time for Chris Young. Second time he brought one pass the eighth I believe. The pitcher the Padres traded him for also came within a couple of innings of a no-no too.

I really like how this trade is turning out for the Padres, Adrian Gonzalez has looked solid at the plate and defensively, Chris Young has been good, the missing number two starter the Padres have lacked behind Peavy (who is having a terrible year by his standards, needs to rebound next year), and I'm still not sure about what Terrmel Sledge will become on this team.

He was fatigued and didn't want to walk a runner into scoring-position, left it over the plate, and the consequences followed.

Looked more like butterflies in his stomach than fatigue.

The no-hitter is losing it's value, much like hitting for the cycle.

True, they did mention in Baseball Tonight that the list of pitchers who have thrown no-hitters, several of them weren't even good pitchers. It involves a lot of luck. Just like the cycle.

Wilson Alvarez, Terry Mulholland, and Kevin Millwood to name a few.

Kevin Millwood's not a good pitcher?

A few above-average years with the Braves...I'd consider him mediocre.

When the poster was mentioned "not very good pitchers", I'm sure he didn't mean downright awful, and so I gave an example of a mediocre pitcher who threw a no-hitter.

I get disappointed when a no no is broken up with a homer. I perfer the old bunt single.

That reminds me of the time the Padres and D-Backs were going at it in 2001 and Curt Schilling was carrying a no-hitter through the sixth or seventh inning in a close game (2-0 D-Backs I believe). Ben Davis led off an inning I believe with a bunt single to get on and Bob Brenly went ape**** about it (he would not let that go for months) saying it's an unwritten rule that players should not bunt when they're being no-hit.

The Padres still lost, but in a close game, if you can't defend a bunt then you don't deserve a no-no.

Mediocore guys would be like Jose Jimenez or Bud Smith.

Much like Brenly, I can't let go of him going nuts. It's one of my favorite ESPN memories.

So now I always hope someone ends a no no with a bunt just by chance that we get to see that clip.

You say that now, but I bet you'd be going nuts if a Yankees pitcher tossed a no-no in the next couple of days.

Like I said in the Padres thread, I was at the game... and it was something amazing to watch. He hardly threw any junk all day, and he got hitters out with a high low-90's fastball. A few of the guys did hit the ball hard, though. Ben Johnson had a great catch in the first inning. And Joe Randa (the videoscreen said Joe Randy for a while) absolutely crushed his home run.

It was pretty funny to watch Piazza leg his triple out, too.

I agree only to some extent. But for me, the perfect game is everything, and will never lose its value. If I ever see one of those live, my God I will be so happy!
