I don't know much about this guy. I don't know how much hype comes with this guy, but the last Japanese pitcher with a lot of hype to come to the states was... what's his face... the fat guy? Said he had a Nolan Ryan fastball, but didn't even hit mid-90's.

This is the guy who throws the "gyroball". Here's a little bit of him vs Cuba in the WBC:

Re: Prized pitcher Matsuzaka given OK to pitch in MLB
Guy has a lot of hype, and pitched very well in the WBC.
Thing is, he isn't a free agent, so he's going to have to sign with a team like Ichiro did. Teams are going to have to bid just to have the rights to negotiate with him. It cost the Mariners $13 million to negotiate with Ichiro, and then they had to sign him, and I've heard it's going to cost more than that to get this guy. Then he's going to get a big contract too.

Unless he learns how to throw a two-seamer or sinker he's going to follow every other Japanese pitcher into oblivion."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Prized pitcher Matsuzaka given OK to pitch in MLB
He does not throw the mysterious gyro-ball, that was a false reports a few years ago that he cleared up during the WBC. He does, however, throw as hard as 97mph with a lot of movement on his pitches. If he's healthy, there's no reason to think he couldn't do well for himself at this level. As was already pointed out though, it will cost a lot to get this guy and I have to believe that if the Yankees want him (and why wouldn't they?) they'll get him.Comment

Re: Prized pitcher Matsuzaka given OK to pitch in MLB
Apparently he was VERY overworked in Japan (averaged roughly 7.2 innings a game each season he's pitched), so that may be a problem later on. It's probably going to cost a good 20-30 million dollars just to talk to the guy.Last edited by BunnyHardaway; 10-10-2006, 07:27 PM.Comment
