Well, as far as I know Green is the only major high priced Jewish player these days. Even back in his Toronto days he took Yom Kippur off. The guy is very religious and that's something we should respect.

BTW I'm sure the first Jewish player in MLB history (Hank Greenberg) did the same and he's in the HOF if i'm not mistaken.

Whether or not thats true doesnt take away from the fact that its valid criticism. The guy gets paid a lot of money and to not play in games down the stretch is worthy of criticism. Like I said, Im sure several NFL players and NBA players who play on Christmas day are also very religious but they still play. No one is saying Green cant be religious but doing so on the Dodgers dime is worthy of scrutiny. In any case, I dont think Lyons was out of bounds to voice objection to this. At the very its a gray area thats fodder for debate and for that reason to be rebuked for this was unfair.

Very true, but he was fired for a whole different reason so this is beyond the scope of the conversation at the moment.

Either way, i'm glad Lyons is done. I never liked the guy!

It's not that Lyons was right or wrong in what he has said in the past, it's the fact that he said anything at all.

He has a history of making mental vocal mistakes about players and fans during games.

If this past incident was the first time someone took what he said to be offensive then he would not have been fired. But, it's not the first time.

Someone took offense and FOX felt it was offensive, and it isn't the first time this has been the case with Lyons, so he gets fired.

After Brennaman praised Piniella for being bilingual, Lyons spoke up.

Fox executives told Lyons after the game he had been fired.

About McCarver... he was fired as the Mets local broadcaster because of his constant questioning of a manager's decisions. It's not even the fact that he questions things... it's that he harps on them over and over... sometimes, innings later... when a manager does something he doesn't "understand." He did this all the time with Valentine's actions... I'm glad he's only doing national broadcasts now...

I disagree that it was off limits for analysts...I dont think Green deserves the kid glove treatment on that as sensitive as it may be. He never should have been reprimanded for that so that should not be part of the past. The only comment that he really made that was truly worthy of reprimand was the crack about the blind person. Its entirely plausible that Lyons made the crack because Piniella said something about finding a wallet and only because of that (not because he was speaking spanish and that makes him untrustworthy). I dont think hes the greatest announcer but I dont think its fair for him to get fired for this reason.

Yankee Pride says it was for past events so if thats the case, its not beyond the scope of why he was fired.

Fox only fired Lyons to please the sponsors...
They knew what kind of guy he was...that's why they hired him.

I don't know about you, but I'm not a big fan of middle-age-robotic-no-opinion-no flavor baseball analysts.

I was only half-listening to that broadcast, but I do recall the comments. At the time I honestly thought nothing of them whatsoever. I'm not sure how a joking accusation towards Lou Piniella that he stole Lyons' wallet could possibly have been taken as an assault on an entire people.

Lyons is on WEEI right now. According to him, Lou is defending him at this point. He was at dinner with Lou when he got the call from FOX.

This whole thing is a friggin joke. It sounds like FOX just wanted an excuse to get rid of him.

Shawn Green has also said that he likes Steve and wasn't offended by anything he said about him sitting out the game.

I was just listening to Olberman on the Dan Patrick Show and he was saying that when they worked together in the past, they always had their fingers crossed that Lyons wouldn't say anything stupid. I guess he has made some other remarks off the air as well.

I didn't hear the broadcast, but from reading the transcript, it seemed as if he was just playing off something that Pinella was talking about earlier (the wallet thing). But again, that was from reading the transcript which is completely different than hearing it...

In addition to what LetsGoBucs said, Keith Olberman was on Patrick's show and they were discussing this, and KO said that Lyons has pissed off alot of people in the industry over the last decade.

I guess part of the reason that he was fired was that this is a recurring problem, not a one time incident. In addition to everything else that we know about, KO also mentioned an issue that I hadn't heard of before.

Apparently in '99 he said...

"Steve Lavin has enough gel in his hair to turn Richard Simmons straight." And that pissed alot of people off at the time, which is understandable.
