Well if you can't make fun of Richard Simmons, who can you make fun of?

There's a fine line between making fun of Richard Simmons and basically insinuating he's gay. David Letterman was always good at making fun of Simmons because while he made it clear that he felt Simmons was a wacko and "not manly" he didn't make the gay part explicit. He did it well enough that you could catch on to it on your own.

Me neither, but there isn't much out there that offends me.

If anyone can't tell that Richard Simmons is gay without being told a joke, then I don't know what to tell them.

People are still way too damn sensitive, do these people REALLY care that Lyons says things? Half the time he doesnt even know what the hell he's saying anyway. He should be fired for being an idiot and adding nothing constructive, not the "racist" and "offensive" comments that he says.

Exactly. They're obviously just using it as an excuse to fire him which is chicken**** IMO, since they're ruining the guys career in the process. Anyone who finds anything offensive in what he said is using their own sterotypes and biases to make a giant leap from what he said to what is actually offensive.

Looks like he'll keep his job with the Dodgers, but is on probation. I don't understand why he's even on probation. I'm not even a Lyons fan, but it's pathetic how sensitive people have become with this stuff.

If it's an accumulative (sp) affect then I understand it but if he hasn't been warned about this kinda stuff by his employers then yes it's pretty baffling.

But what did he say in this instance that was offensive? If you want to fire him based on merit, that's fine. But don't label him as a racist just as an excuse to get rid of him.

Agreed, I was listening to the radio yesterday and one of the co-hosts of the show said something very interesting about it.

                      (i'm paraphrasing)

"The whole thing about hispanics and watching out for your wallet has no connection. I may be stupid and i've been accused of being stupid in my life but I just don't see the connection there. FOX made a major leap of fait by firing Lyons and in many ways firing Lyons was a discredit to Hispanics because there was no racially motivated hatred in his statement.

                      (emphasis mine)

So basically FOX took a leap of faith in connecting the innocent, playful comments with racism and by firing Lyons they've made hispanics look bad because to be honest there is no connection to what Lyons said with anything racially motivated.

Exactly. Like I said in my previous post, people are using their own stereotypes to find something offensive in this. It makes it even dumber because Piniella's family is from Spain. Is their some stereotype of Spaniards stealing wallets that I don't know about?

I think it's clear that somebody at Fox wanted him gone and used this as an excuse, which is pretty lame considering what it's going to do to Lyons career.

I don't know if FOX made Hispanics look bad.

But, perhaps they made it obvious that the Hispanic market is of great interest to them and they would prefer to not have an announcer that could potentially offend them.

I really don't think this has anything to do with his comments being racist. I just think it has to do with him saying something that someone COULD find offensive. Lyons is usually bordering on the cusp with his comments.
