Apparently Ken Macha is on the verge of being canned for Girardi

Per ESPN Radio. Interesting idea, Macha still has two years left on his contract.

that makes sense.. fire a manager that guided the team to the playoffs.. oh, yes, he is to blame because his team couldnt hit against Detroit...

      Good move.

BTW, wasn't Macha fired last year, and then re-hired when they couldn't get whoever it was they wanted to replace him?

Either that or his contract ran out.

I know he interviewed with the Pirates last year, but they chose Jim Tracy over him.

If its all random as Beane suggests, why does it matter who the manager is?

well i retract my earlier statement.. just was listening on Cold Pizza about this... seems like Macha was not liked by his players at all & never really was a communicator with them..

Yep they wanted a new manager last season but couldn't find anyone suitable. This will be VERY interesting if they hire Girardi as he puts an emphasis on small ball rather then playing for the big inning. Girardi loves the NL style of the 1980s and it served him well in Florida. I don't think he can do that in Oakland tho.

Billy Beane has to know this.

I wonder if maybe he feels Girardi will add that extra element to Oakland's game.

Oakland will still play by Beane's "rules" because the team will be made up of players he knows fits his style. But, when it comes to communicating with players and late-game strategy Girardi's approach may be what Oakland needs.

I doubt Leyland would've come back to Pittsburgh anyways so don't get too upset.

He lives in Pittsburgh and wanted an interview, so there's a chance he might have.

But, it's more of an indictment on the Pirates management than whether or not he would have actually managed there. Macha (another Pittsburgh native) was ready to leave the A's for the Pirates and Leyland wanted an interview. They turned down Macha for the 2nd time, and didn't even interview Leyland...

Leyland said he was interested, but who really knows? The Pirates GM had his mind made up before the "interview process" even began. He knew Tracy from a ways back and IMO knew he was going to hire him before the season was over.

Truth be told, it wouldn't have made a bit of difference IMO if Leyland, Macha or Tracy was here. The Pirates need some players to fill the holes they have in that offense.

I guess it's official now. Girardi seems like a good fit for them.

People who do not watch the A's assume that Macha is the right manager for the A's. I watched over 140 games this year, and I can say with complete confidence that the guy was a joke. If it wasn't for his horrendus management of our bullpen (which reared its ugly head in the playoffs in games 2 and 4), lack of motivation, and lack of communication with his team and fellow coaches, we could have easily won over 100 games.

The guy is a pacifist, and like I said, he cannot communicate with his team. The reason we lost this series was because we got outmanaged by Jim Leyland -- and half of that had to do with Macha's failure to get his team to compete.

I didn't watch many A's games this past year but if the manager has to get his players ready "to compete" in the playoffs, then those players don't even belong in the game.
