Fair enough, in that case then, the ratings for the League Championship Series in 2003 had ginormous ratings then did a complete nosedive once it was NY and Florida. Since the Red Sox had low ratings in 2004, perhaps the Cubs were driving the ratings in 2003? Im partly kidding. I realize Yankees-RedSox get a lot of attention, especially back then but still. Look at 2003 before you rely on 2004 too much.

In other words, they begin to try and change the game in order to make it more marketable and appealing to certain demographics which currently aren't watching. Whether it means tampering with the rules or messing with the dynamic of how things are run, none of us really know, but we can all agree when things like that start to happen, the true fans definitely don't win.
Oh, I definitely agree that they need to care. But normal ppl and fans, I guess everyone but the people you mentioned, have no reason to care about ratings.

The difference is, there is hate for the Red Sox. It's not like they haven't had some sort of success, other then winning it all. The Cubs are the lovable losers. They find ways to lose, I mean the Marlins series says it all. Forget about the Bartman situation, how about Gonzalez botching a tailor made double play. If the Cubs win that and are in the WS against either the Yanks or Sox, that would be HUGE ratings.

Outside of Yankee fans, who wasn't pulling for the Sox to beat the Cards and win the Series though? Sure, if the matchup had been something like Sox/Mets, the ratings would've likely been a lot different. However, the flipside of that is, if the Cubs are going to make it to the Series and have a huge impact on the ratings, they can't pull an easy win or unappealing matchup like Boston did. If that Series is going to do any better than what the Yanks/Arizona pulled after 9/11, it would have to be the aforementioned Cubs/Sox or Cubs/Yanks marquee matchup. But having the Cubs meet up with someone like the A's, Twins, or Tigers would probably be ratings suicide.

Ofcourse it wouldn't be as high as Cubs/Yanks but it would still be higher then any WS in the past couple years. The Cubs have a national following and you can guarantee not most but all of their fans will be watching these games.

Saying all this though, the Cubs won't make the WS anytime soon.

But wouldn't that 70% want to watch their cross town rivals lose in the World Seires. And alot of people love to hate the White Sox manager

I'm guessing the majority of that 70% would be completely indifferent, as opposed to the "gotta watch the Sox lose!" mindset. If I dislike a team, I'm not going to watch them play a marquee game just in hope that they lose, I'm only going to watch if I'm expecting it to be a watchable game. Which goes back to my marquee matchup argument from above. White Sox fans aren't likely to care about a Series between the Cubs and Angels, regardless of if their crosstown rivals are involved or not, but if it's Cubs and Red Sox, I could definitely see them tuning in because the appeal of the matchup.

Because I know how most fans are. I remeber the two catchers going after it in IL play this year so i know there's some bad blood between the White Sox and Cubs. I also hate the Cubs(Bartman is my hero). But I watched every game the Cubs played in the playoffs that year not because it was an appealing matchup but because I hate the Cubs.

Advertisers. They're the ones that pay the bills.

For me, I watch regardless (except I can't watch past the 6th inning because I keep falling asleep!), so I don't care what the ratings are. I wouldn't care if they moved it to ESPN or TNT or Vs. for all I care. As long as it's on, I'll watch it.

Yes, we all know the advertisers like higher ratings. Are you just being condascending or do you honeslty think he doesnt already know that? But that has nothing to do with why the media likes to report and fixate over the ratings. Its relevant to their world but not to the people theyre reporting to. How in love with yourself do you have to be to think people want to know that? Just because they report it, is it newsworthy or relevant to you...really? Thats someone elses problem.

Well, I don't obsess about it but it is one of the bigger rivalries in baseball that dates back before either one of us were born. It's probably reversed. I think most Cubs fans(except you of course and the ones you know) hate the Cards because they dominate the divison most years and the White Sox now since they won a WS and are the best team in Chicago.
