Barajas? Man i've seen that guy play but if I were the Jays i'd go for his backup Gerald Laird. He may not have the offense yet but he strikes me as being a very good defensive catcher.

Wow, is that a club or player option in 2009? $10 mill option for an injury prone 41 year old?Comment

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
I've heard that it's a mutual option meaning that if both Thomas and the Jays agree to it then he'll be back for the 3rd year. I have a feeling that won't happen.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
Call me a homer, but I have a feeling that the A's milked about all that was left out of Frank Thomas and this is kindof a desperation move by the Jays. That is a ton of money to pay a man that big, and that old. I hope it works out for him, but im just not feeling it.University of Oregon

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
I think Frank may have another couple of good seasons in him and unlike in Oakland he won't be expected to carry the Blue Jays offense.
This deal was done in part to sell the idea of staying in Toronto to Vernon Wells. Everyone knows Wells has not been too happy there and this way they think they can show him they are commited to winning.
However, it may all be in vain. Wells still may want out of Toronto after next season is over and the Blue Jays believe that Thomas can be the big slugger in the middle of the lineup which would allow them to trade or let Wells walk.
I wonder if they have forgotten they have a guy named Glaus in their lineup, he's not bad with a bat either...Comment

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
Actually I stand corrected. As it was revealed as a "vested option". If Thomas has 521 plate appearances in '07 he'll get the 3rd year. If he doesn't then he won't be with Toronto. There isn't a buyout option either.
Kinda stupid on JP's part IMO.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
Thats just irresponsible when they need pitching so badly. If I were a fan, I'd rather have them wait and possibly sit on that money until the right guy were available.Comment

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
I'd agree if this is the only big move JP makes this offseason. There's still questions as to what the budget for this team is. There's a lot of speculation that it's going to be in the 95 mil range. So while i'm a bit dismayed by the Thomas deal i'm going to take a "wait and see" approach for now.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
I'd expect to see Thomas hobbling to the plate as much as he possibly can and then some in 07 then.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. Re: Jays closing in on deal with Frank Thomas
Actually it could end up being pretty funny if the Jays are out of it (again) by September and whoever the Jays manager is then trying to find excuses not to play him. Looks like it will be another fight for Gibbons if he's still there.Comment
