    Alou to Mets close

Meh- he's a good hitter when healthy but man, hes definitely starting to show his age. Its only a one year deal which is fine.

I guess Omar is saving up for pitching.

The A's are also reportedly interested in Alou to be their DH but probably will not try to top the $8.million dollar offer by the Mets.

It's a solid deal, if it goes down. Alou is a inj risk but he can handle the bat and play decent defense.

He's a good guy off the bench at this point in his career. I'd be shocked if he starts a lot of games for the Mets.

For a 40 year old player, Alou played extremely well last season. Hard to tell if he can keep those numbers up for a season, but here's something to note.

          2006: 98 games - hit .301 with 22 homeruns and 74 RBI, .923 OPS
          2005: 123 games - hit .321 with 19 homeruns and 63 RBI, .918 OPS

He played less games last season and finished with better power numbers (.571 SLG compared to .518 in 2005).

He still doesn't strike out an incredible amount of times. He still has very good patience at the plate.

Of course, players have a tendency to fall off rapidly at his age. Still a solid one-year signing. I'd expect the Mets want him to start.

He was solid with the Cubs and Giants when healthy. I see no reason why he won't hit .280-.300 and give them 75 RBI's.

It's funny. When the Cubs released him, I thought he was on his way down. Dude just keeps putting up solid offensive numbers. As long as you keep him away from guys named Bartman, you'll be OK.

as a huge Mets fan, I really don't like the deal. I mean if it was 5 years ago then fine, Alou is 40 and I don't think he's got much left, but oh well I guess we will have to wait and see.

I see Endy playing ALOT this year

I'm predicting that Alou will be the first bat off the bench by June.
As a Met fan...I would have liked the deal if it was for bench/pinch hitting strength....but I don't like him as a starter. I would have rather kept Floyd(maybe not!)

I think this will be Alou's last year in baseball.
