First of all, it's a given that money spendature is out of control, and small market teams can't possibly compete with this kind of spending going on -- there will be a strike in the near future, I can sense it.
Second, why the hell would the Mariners want to sign one of the most temperamental outfielders currently in the game? Thank god it's just a one year contract, and god willing the second year option will not pan out. Guillen is awesome...against 7 or 8 specific teams....and then his numbers go down the toilet....In this league? I predict a below average BA for Guillen...in fact, I'm having trouble understanding why he's so much better of a choice than some of the guys on the Mariners Minor League teams? The M's signing Guillen to this deal is liken to the signings they made of Lawton and Everett last year, and look how they panned out.
Another thing -- why the hell did they let Meche go? Once he learns how and when to throw that curve, he'll be unstoppable...getting tired of waiting, I suppose would be a good answer...but so what? He was still a decent #5 guy in the rotation, if not at least a good choice for long relief until he finally figured out what he needed to in order to dominate (and I think eventually he will).
It just seems more and more common to see the M's management in general not really looking at the depth of the numbers a guy puts up, but more the popularity of the player and the potential they might have to bring fans and money back to the team. They don't care about winning games, they care about making money and keeping the fans happy, shutting them up. I'm frickin' tired of it, and this signing only highlights how real the problem is....they could have gone after some better options than guillen, but who else was fighting them for him? They take the easiest route possible that they assume will keep fans happy --
-- Well here is one UNHAPPY FAN!
