    Bonds re-signs with Giants - 1 year, $16M

No link yet, RotoWorld reporting. The deal is pending a physical.

While some might call that a really expensive contract for an old, steroid ravaged, broken down player who isn't nearly as dominating as he once was, I'm sure the Giants will come out the winners in the long run as Bonds will generate a tremendous amount of gate revenue as he approaches the record.

And that's really what it's all about.

We all knew he'd be back. I heard he was demanding somewhere around 40mil for 2 years in the Winter Meetings. No way another team was willing to give him that.

Giants needed to re-sign him. They had no big bat in the middle of the order with Alou leaving and if Bonds didn't return the middle of the order would have Pedro Feliz and Rich Aurilia.

            No one should be shocked.

I'm glad he didn't leave to an AL team to DH.

So, assuming Bonds breaks the record this season...

What does he do afterwards? Retire or go to the AL?

I would think he'll retire after the season if he breaks it.

True but only one year so not like it straps them long term, all the impact bats are off the market so might as well give it to Bonds then it'll open back up next year and they can make a run for another big name FA.

Considering he plays about as many games as JD Drew he's a lot more valuable than Drew. He's not quite a defensive liability yet. No, he won't get to some of the balls that he used to, but he won't attempt to get the ball at that spot either. He's a smart outfielder in the sense that he knows what he can and can't get to, so he'll always take proper routes and hold runners to only as far as they should go pending his ability to get to the ball. He also still has a decent glove and a very accurate arm... powerful or not.

And his bat is as dangerous as anybody out there. His OBP last year was over .450, and I think he really got healthier as the season went on last year. Besides, if Bochy is smart, he'll bat Bonds third instead of fourth. I can't tell you how many times the #3 hitter last year (usually when it was Feliz) would do something that would always make Bonds lead off the next inning... usually it was grounding into a double play. In 2001 - 2002, the Giants combined for more first-inning runs than any other team by a rather large margin, and it would be thanks Aurilia/Bonds, Bonds for the most part.

I just hope he isn't as much of a bitch this year and pulls himself early out of the ballgame all of the time. I understand there's age-pain, but there's also helping your team, and yourself, toward a playoff spot and World Series victory. Every team but Arizona is really looking to revamp their depth chart in the NL West, and Bonds needs to be in the lineup.

If it isn't for anything else, JD Drew's $14 million isn't going to be made up by fans coming for him, but Bonds' $16 million will. Beyond all of that, that's what makes his contract more valuable.

bonds was a totally different player the last two months of the season, sprinting around the field, robbing hrs. and hitting like only barry can, if he stays healthy i can see him having a great season.

There's no way this deal will fall through. The Giants are the only team that really wants him so....

Thank goodness he gets to besmirsh (sp) the history of the Giants great franchise instead of another team by tainting the greatest record in all of sports.

I still think $16 million is a lot, but I really can't blame him for the market.

BTW, I don't think you got my PM the other day. Your box is full I believe.
