Report: Mariners sign Miguel Batista to 3-year, $24 mil contract

    Okay, now I'm pissed....

I heard they were going after him, but I was hoping otherwise...I was cool with Ramirez cause I was assuming he would be a back of the rotation guy who would probably perform better than Piniero....but now?

Now I'm wondering why the hell the Mariners seem to actually enjoy settling for less than sub par....I mean....jesus...they could have gone for Zito (not going to happen now that they signed Batista), they could have signed one of the many pitchers from the Cards, they could have signed more than a couple of pitchers that they KNEW could post sub-4.00 ERAs, they could have turned the team from a loser to a team that could at least give us 5+ games over .500....

Instead? They actually sought the most sub par players they could find...guys you can't really trust for much except to guarantee that things are kept status quo.

This is really pissing me off, now.

So safe to say 4th year finishing in the last place and if so, possibly good bye Ichiro?

At this point I wouldn't mind. I'm getting tired of being known for Ichiro, and Ichiro not getting the credit he deserves just because he's on our poorly managed team.

Yes, Ichiro is gone. I hope the M's finally make one decent move this year and trade him before the deadline. Although way overvalued as a leadoff hitter, Ichiro is a damn good player who can bring in some decent prospects to rebuild the org's farm system. The M's need prospects because that's the only way they will become competitive again...its obvious they don't want to overspend the money to bring in any top of the rotation arms.

And I actually like Miguel Batista for 8/24 if they didn't already have Washburn, Ramirez, and Woods or Baek at the end of the rotation. It will be another long season for the M's. Sigh.

It's possible they didn't go after Zito because they already got burned with a previous Boras client that everyone knew was going to be overpaid.

I'm telling you man, just like in the Ramirez-Soriano thread, the track record speaks for itself. Bavasi is a tool.

Don't think this is an awful signing, but is far from good.

Batista was really solid during the years of 2001-2003, his first stint with ARizona. Since then, he has been mediocre.

Oh I agree. I think Batista has some talent. He saved 30-some games a couple of years ago and has had decent seasons. But how many #4 and #5 pitchers do we need?

Even with all the M's bashing going on over the past week or so, I still like the direction the team is going. I hope they can keep on to Ichiro but I'm beginning to have my doubts. Yunesky and Jose Lopez though, in a few years, will be one of the best middle infield tandems in the league. And even though Kenji is already 30, I think he still has a few more years before we hand the job over to the USC catcher (his name escapes me). We have young talent, just not enough.

A tool is putting it nicely. This just sucks, all we did is add to our collection of #5 pitchers.

What's with all the WSU avatars all of a sudden? Not that I'm complaining

Anyway, really quick - what did you think of the Cardinals rotation last year? A bunch of average-at-best starters? Marquis, Weaver, Suppan, Reyes and Carpenter. That worked out ok, wouldn't you say? I'm sure their fans were lamenting their rotation during the championship parade.....

We need to get over the idea that you absolutely must have 5 aces to win the whole thing. You don't. You can have a collection of back-end rotation guys, and as long as they stay healthy and give you solid performances, and ONE guy has a career year (Felix becomes Carpenter from 2006?), then anything is possible. Besides, this is the AL west we're talking about, not the AL east where it's a virtual lock that it's New York, Boston and everyone else fighting for 3rd. Win the AL west, and recent history has shown, anything can happen.

And, if Batista's reported work ethic can rub off on Felix, all the better! That kid needs some serious leadership and positive influences. Based on that article in the Times, his offseason consists of sleeping and watching TV.

I disagree. Carpenter is a #1 ace by a mile. He is top 5 and probably top 3 in the league right now. Reyes is a rook, but his stuff is filthy and he isn't even close to a back end of the rotation guy. Plus, yeah they played solid in the playoffs, but you didn't mention that monumental collapse at the end of the year in which they deserved to be knocked out of playoff contention (with the way they were playing). Did you watch the playoffs? Weaver pitched unbelievable. JEFF WEAVER! I highly doubt he'll do that ever again.

Which brings me to the M's. Felix is a #2, maybe even a #3 right now. Washburn is a #3 at best. All the rest are 4's and 5's. That a playoff team does not make.

And yeah, this is the AL West. Every team is getting better except for us. We are just dinking around picking up scraps for millions of dollars per year.

Just a reminder to everyone singing Batista's praises -- the guy has yet to win more than 11 games in one season.

Yes, but he's only started more than 30 games twice. He gives the M's versatility to where he can start, pitch long relief, setup, or even close if JJ is hurt. He's a GB machine which works well with our infield at home or away (unlike Washburn whose miserable on the road thanks to his enormous flyball rate). He's a little wild, but that's common for GB pitchers to have a higher walk rate. I like the signing the more I think about it.

I'm also glad the M's non-tendered Piniero today. See ya Pinata!
