Nearly as important for Washington, however, is that Seattle has agreed to pay $12 million of the remaining $16 million left on Vidro's contract for 2007 and '08. Because of the amount of money exchanging hands, the commissioner's office had to approve the deal before it could go through, and officials there have been aware of it for several days.

Mariners to acquire Jose Vidro
The trade -- which is pending a physical for Vidro, expected to take place Thursday -- is a textbook example of what the Nationals say they are trying to do, eschewing success in 2007 but stockpiling players that might contribute in the future. According to sources familiar with the deal, the Nationals are due to receive Chris Snelling, a 25-year-old outfielder with a history of injuries, and Emiliano Fruto, a 22-year-old right-handed reliever with an exceptional changeup, in exchange for Vidro.

Re: Mariners to acquire Jose Vidro
According to Rotoworld, the plan is for Vidro to be the DH. Seattle is not having a great offseason. I think I want to put my resume in for their GM job. Bavasi is making Isiah Thomas look like a genius.Formerly Favre4vrComment

Re: Mariners to acquire Jose Vidro
The trade was agreed upon between the two clubs late last week during the Winter Meetings, but both sides needed Vidro's approval because he has a no-trade clause. For approving the trade, according to sources, Vidro was given a vesting option for 2009.

You know, I feel really bad for Seattle fans. It seems to me that the Bavasi family is the most overrated baseball executive family ever. Bill is clueless, Peter nearly led the Blue Jays down the path to mediocrity and ran an inept Cleveland Indians franchise as well.

Re: Mariners to acquire Jose Vidro
I actually think this is a good deal for the Mariners. They aren't committing much money to him and since Vidro can play multiple positions he can be viewed as one of the best utility players in the game.
This is all assuming that the young pitcher the Mariners gave up doesn't turn out to be a stud. I think everyone knows how good Snelling is, thats why the Mariners were more than willing to give him up.Comment

hmm...you don't say...
kinda like the guy we already got...by the name of Willie Bloomquist. I'd take Vidro over Bloomquist any day...but that's not the point; The point is that we already had a freakin' utility guy.
As for him playing DH and some 1st? Uhhh....no thanks...DH? He hits for power about as well as Beltre has the past few years, and 15-20 jacks at DH isn't my idea of what the M's should be looking for. As for 1B? Uhh...I'd rather have Beltre DH and Vidro at 3rd.
Nobody is arguing that Vidro is a pretty damn good second basemen w/ the tools to be an excellent utility guy....what they're arguing is whether or not the M's actually need another utility guy.
It's the same argument that has been going on with the pitchers the M's have been picking up, only with a different punchline: "Do we really need another back of the rotation pitcher?" has become "Do we really need another utility infielder?"
It seems the guys in charge of the M's are determined to keep the team a mediocre one. They've had dozens of chances to actually improve it, but instead they have simply kept things status quo, and by the looks of it they continue to actually seek out every mediocre player they can find.
It gets rather annoying VERY QUICKLY.Comment

Re: Mariners to acquire Jose Vidro
I guess that means Felipe Lopez will move to 2B for the Nationals with Cristian Guzman playing SS. The Nats are also trying to sign D'Angelo Jimenez to be the backup middle infielder. The Nats also have at least 3 holes to fill in their starting rotation and aside from a few minor league invites have not signed anyone.
This is the first offseason in a long time that this team has had an owner and so far it seems they were better off without one.Comment

Re: Mariners to acquire Jose Vidro
Aside from the fact we have ZERO need for a 2nd baseman (Hello, Jose Lopez?) I guess I can live with this deal. Since he could play several positions, which is nice. Unlike the other reject Goodwill parts we have acquired this off season, this deal is decent, not Barry Zito great, but decent.Comment
