im a yankee fan and this is probably a good move providing he comes back from his injury, hes very underrated and next year clemens will probably gone, and perhaps pettite and wells too. so all in all, its a good move. but, jeez, its just so funny how they sign anyone they want. rumour had it that boston was going after him, which gave the yanks extra incentive to get him

Another pitcher! Why? He won't help us this year, and has a gamble even next year. Hes not exactly a youngster. Whats the point? We already have like 6 pitchers

This is a great move for 2004. It's a classic case of low risk-high reward. This year he's only making the minimum, and before he got hurt, he was a very solid pitcher for the Cubs. The Tommy John surgery usually takes a year to recover, so by 2004 he should be good to go. With Clemens and Wells probably gone after this season, and maybe Pettitte as well, they needed some more pitching. Then, after this year, you get a healthy Lieber to go with Mussina, Weaver, and Contreras, and probably another free agent on the market (Colon, Randy Johnson, etc..)

I expect Pettite to be back next year. And Lieber is 30 something years old. After serious surgery, I don't expect him to win close to 20 games again. I'd rather develop a youngster, though I don't really know what our situation is with pitching prospects in the farm system

They also keep him from the Boston Red Sox.... I think Steinbrenner is really putting one over on the Sox this year. Screw the salary cap! Oh, and do you want Colon? Tough, I'll send him to Chicago. You want Lieber? Tough, I'm signing him so he can sit on the DL all year and we can have him next year.

Not sure what they're thinking on Pettitte. He is a free agent after this year, and there are some concerns with his elbow. I'd like him back because lefties are always a plus in the Stadium, and he's been very solid. I guess it depends on how much he wants. As for Lieber, most of these pitchers come back strong from Tommy John surgery. There are no guarantees of course, but again, he's a minimal risk due to his low salary this year and next. Most of it are incentives. IMO, it's a no-lose situation for them.

Hey, there will be one added bonus for the Yankees due to Lieber having to sit out the year : He will have to stay away from the postgame buffet spreads in the lockerroom.
