"Relocating a team to Portland makes sense"

Phil Rogers writes on the eligibility of Portland, Oregon for the next team relocation move

Pretty much says everything I've been saying for the past 5 years -- Nike is here, Intel is here, the city keeps growing so fast that the urban growth boundary (which keeps commercial, Agricultural, and residential mixed so as to avoid another Los Angeles type mishap) can't keep up with it....it makes financial sense to move a MLB team to Portland. I think fans here are ready for it, too. There are a lot of M's fans here just waiting to become fans of their own city's team. The thing is...if a team came to Portland? It would stay there. That is what Portland has going for it -- staying power. I guarantee that no team would have any reason to leave Portland, because the only thing they would have to worry about is attendance, and I seriously doubt that would be a problem at all. If Portland isn't the next city to get a team, I want to know what city is....can you name any city that could possibly even hope of competing with what Portland offers? I know I can't.

Okay...rant over...read the article, it's pretty interesting and mentions some excellent points.

We have a couple of devoted Portland/Oregon MLB fans on this board...dce1228 is probably my best example. A team will probably thrive there.

It's always been easy to take on the Yankee fans of this board when you don't have a team to compare rings with. Although that's an advantage I enjoy, having a team here in P-Town to root for and grow with season to season is worth a life-time of ringless fingers.

haha Believe me, I didn't forget you, but I hear ya. How do the Mariners fare this season?...that's probably as close to an MLB team you're going to get up in your area, you bastard.

I thought I heard the Mariners were up in arms over a team possibly coming to Portland? They insisted that it would cut into their ticket sales since fans from Portland would be less inclined to make the trip to Seattle to catch a game if they could just drive 15-20 minutes and watch a game here. I wouldnt mind a team being here but they need to build a stadium similar to Safeco with a retractable roof since it rains here so frequently.

What other cities would be good locations for an MLB team? Las Vegas?

I ask this because I'm going to be starting a new franchise in ASB 05 with the Expansion mode.

I always used Las Vegas in that mode. Too bad making the franchise was more fun than playing it.

On January 9, 2006, Marlins officials met with Portland city leaders, including Mayor Tom Potter. Following the meeting, Mayor Potter announced that the city would not finance a baseball stadium, despite the Oregon Legislature's 2003 approval of a plan to finance a stadium. Whether this has put Portland entirely out of the running is unclear.

Yup..This is the best opportunity Portland is going to get for a while...Marlins, no less. Two championships in their short 13 year existence.

Portland would be a good choice, the other one that sticks out would be Omaha or Lincoln, NE. No team is that close (KC being closest) and baseball is pretty big there- college WS. A major league team could do well in that market. Portland is probably a better choice though. Las Vegas would be another possibility but gambling is a big issue obviously. There's always talk of a 3rd NY area team (probably in Jersey or Brooklyn.) As long as they only move a team and don't expand as there are already too many teams.
