Who's going to get Brian Lawrence?

This is of course a question I never thought I'd be asking, being that Lawrence is coming off of an injury and a few not so amazing seasons.

However, that being said, at least four teams are interested enough in Lawrence to have offered enough of a contract to apparently start a little bidding war.

"The Seattle Mariners have been characterized recently as the front-runners for 30-year-old free agent pitcher Brian Lawrence.

But Lawrence's agent, Page Odle, said Thursday the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates improved their offers. The San Diego Padres are also in the running." - Source

The word on the street is that after his surgery, Lawrence has gained a little on his fastball, has cut to his cutter, and has regained strength and faith in his other pitches as well. Regardless of whether it's true or not, it's been enough to garner attention from at least four teams. Something tells me that Lawrence is most likely to sign with the Padres or Mariners, being that he had success with the Padres in the past and the Mariners are likely to offer more for him than the Rockies or the Pirates. However, it will be interesting to see just where he goes.

Back of the rotation guy who can log you 200 innings if the injury doesn't linger and post a 4.50 ERA.

    Yawn.

Those are pretty good numbers for a back of the staff guy..

B-Law is only good if his fastball can stay up around 87-88... if not he gets into a lot of trouble.

San Diego is waiting on David Wells to decide whether or not he wants to play for them next season so i think that puts the Padres as the 4th horse in this race. Lawrence is a guy who generally keeps the ball down so Colorado is not a bad fit for him. Pittsburgh is probably not going to sign him and may end up increasing their offer to Tomo Ohka. Seattle would probably be the best place for Lawrence. The Mariners play in a big ballpark, they have a decent team defensively and could use a solid innings eater in their rotation.

Granted, but for a team like Seattle, he might be the ace...

              kidding, of course.

                LOL!

Wherever he goes, I'd be surprised to see a contract longer than a year or two. He probably wants to go to a team where he can prove he's worth the big dollars, and then come back next year and try and get a bigger long term contract.

Re: Who's going to get Brian Lawrence?

Familiarity with the region and the genuine interest from the beginning led starter Brian Lawrence to agree in principle with the Rockies on one-year deal with a club option Sunday, according to his agent.

                    Solid move for them.

I have always wanted the Rockies to get good.

                    Or atleast decent.

A tad surprising to me, as I was expecting him to go back to San Diego to be quite honest, but this is definitely a good sign by the Rockies. They've been looking to break out a little, and I honestly think that with some good pitching they could do just that.

The Rockies were going to be pretty sick in a few years anyways. They have a ton of young talent lin Ian Stewart, Troy Tulowitzki, Joe Koshansky, Chris Iannetta, Matt Holliday, Brad Hawpe, and Ubaldo Jiminez just to name a few.

Only way B-Law comes back here is if David Wells didn't re-sign. Our rotation is pretty much set barring some bizarre events.

Brian Lawrence will make a good one year stop gap to give some of those guys a chance to grow into major leaguers, yes? This is a nice signing that offers a little security -- if Lawrence has regained some of his former glory.
