Oh please...please no...please dear god...I beg of you...no....not this....no...
ANYTHING BUT THIS....WHY GOD...WHY!?
The one pitcher I hate the most....what have I done to deserve this? What has any Mariner fan done to deserve this?
I'd rather have Baek. -
Re: Mariners sign Weaver
I'm assuming we're overlooking his early season 3-10 record with a 6.29 ERA before being released from the Angels? And overlooking his career record of 86-101 with a ERA of 4.58? For 8 Million dollars? *Sighs* I don't even know what to say anymore.Comment

Re: Mariners sign Weaver
This deal makes no sense on the basis that Scott Boras and Weaver wanted a long term deal and that's why he didn't re-up with the Cardinals.
We offered him like 2 years, $6 mil per with incentives and he turns it down for a 1 year $8.3 million deal?
HOW IS THAT STABILITY?
Oh yeah, have fun with him. Not only does he have a new ring, he also doesn't have the best pitching coach in the bigs -- who makes miracle reconstruction projects out of guys like Weaver -- and probably less motivation to play as hard ... although he does need to play for a new contract.Comment

You poor man. I feel bad for the M's. Atleast Safco is a nice stadium. To bad you might become the worst team in baseball this offseason. You poor SOB.Comment

Sounds good, but in reality neither one of these pitchers are going to have "big" seasons (unless by big they mean disappointment) to cash in on next winter. If Seattle is lucky maybe Weaver finishes with a record around 12-15.Comment

Weaver has taken Tomo Ohka's philosophy of decline multi year offer from one team sign one year contract with another team have big season and cash in next winter.

My theory though, Weaver is returning to the AL West where he got murdered last year as an Angel, I think he'll be pretty mediocre, and I predict that next offseason he'll be looking at another 1 year deal somewhere for a significant amount less money, with as many holes as the Cardinals rotation has and with the late season success he experienced in St. Louis I could see the Cards lookin at him for a cheap 1 year or 2 year deal bringing him back with Dave Duncan, or if Seattle falls out of contention before the trade deadline I think Weaver is definitely goin on the block, Cards rotation looks pretty bad this year so I wouldn't be shocked if we dealt a low level prospect for him like we did last year.
That said I wish Weaver a lot of luck, without him the Cardinals don't win a ring this past year. Not like he owed us anything, I mean sure Dave Duncan did turn his career around and allow him to sign a nice contract like the one he got from the Mariners but also have to remember he was a key part in bringing the Cards a championship so I'll call it even.Favorite Teams:

Re: Mariners sign Weaver
The Cardinals face the possibility of opening next season with a starting rotation of:
Chris Carpenter
Anthoney Reyes
Kip Wells
Adam Wainwright
Ryan Franklin
With that said the Cardinals are likely to go after another starting pitcher. I would not be surprised to see the Cards go after Steve Trachsel or Mark Redman to take Weaver's spot in the rotation.Comment

So, comparing to last season, Carpenter is still Carpenter. Reyes and Wainwright will be better than what Marquis and Mulder provided last year. Wells will be better than Ponson. The only hole is possibly the 5th starter (Franklin isn't necessarily written in ink). They're going to have a competition between Franklin, Brad Thompson, Braden Looper and Chris Narveson (rookie) plus any one who wants to establish themselves. I can't imagine anyone of those guys bombing out like Ponson did, so it's not as big a hole as one would believe.
Suppan is the only loss that kinda stinks. Not really a great in-season pitcher and notoriously poor starter. Finishes strong and has leadership qualities. In all fairness, Jeff Suppan is an average, back-end pitcher. (note: check out Suppan's numbers BEFORE becoming a Cardinal and compare them to Franklin's...not much different. I'm not predicting the future, but Duncan does have a way with these guys)
Plus, they'll be getting a healthy Mulder back mid-season.
Mark Redman and Steve Trachsel are a waste of money (something the Cardinals are not too willing to spend). Plus, they have a full 40-man roster and would have had to make a change to add Weaver. They would have done it for Weaver (known commodity) but not for either Redman or Trachsel (unknowns).Comment

Jocketty has said that after Weaver hes done looking at SP's so it looks like we'll go into spring training and probably the regular season with what we've got.
So far Carpenter, Wells, and Reyes are guaranteed spots, if Izzy is healthy then Wainwright will take one spot, if not Wainwright will close. For the last spot or two its an open competition between Ryan Franklin, Braden Looper, Brad Thompson, and Chris Narveson.Favorite Teams:
