I really miss Baseball Weekly...

I'm in a baseball sort of mood lately, and I started thinking about how much I miss Baseball Weekly. The magazine used to be the best periodical I subscribed to, and to the best of my knowledge, it has not been replaced, or even matched, by any other baseball related periodical to date.

I stuck with the publication when it switched over to Sports Weekly, but as soon as it started covering NASCAR I cancelled, as it seemed to be chasing money and popular sports, instead of sticking to it's roots and reporting on the game of baseball.

The magazine was great, and it's just a shame it's no longer around anymore in its entirety. I recently read that the MLB Innings Extra Innings package is going to be Direct TV exclusive this season, which is another unfortunate turn of events, and yet another instance of baseball coverage being lessened at the cost of more profitable ventures.

I think Baseball Weekly switching to football, and later NASCAR, was one of the worst publishing decisions I've been affected by to date, and I suspect that there won't be another periodical created any time soon to take its place.

agreed.. i always picked up a copy when i went into work.. however, got tired of reading other articles (especially when they went NASCAR)..

Great, great paper when it was Baseball Weekly.

Not that bad when it became Sports Weekly especially since I enjoy reading about football (second favorite sport behind baseball).

Terrible now that it covers NASCAR. And it isn't because I'm not interested in NASCAR. It's just the fact that Baseball is getting pushed aside. I recently bought an issue that had less about baseball than NASCAR and the NFL.

Haven't bought one since and in fact I don't even see it in my neighborhood anymore. The grocery stores around here probably also hated it.

No NASCAR and they are adding College Football this year. Great decision as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting. That is a positive move, in my opinion.

As for adding college football, that seems more fitting as it's played during baseball's off-season and is more related than NASCAR.

I still think it was best when it strictly covered baseball, and I'm not sure I'll be returning, but if true, it's nice to see NASCAR coverage being removed. It seemed way out of place, and too much like a money grab for a magazine that used to cover baseball superbly.

I picked up a copy of Sports Weekly the other day, and lo and behold.. No NASCAR.

The magazine with just football and baseball is bearable, though I still feel the baseball coverage has been lacking since other sports were added. It seems each Sports Weekly has just one full length baseball story, a "Baseball Report" that features shorter blurbs, and the standard team notes. It just feels light and unfulfilling to me.

Instead of adding college football, USA Today should remove all football, add college baseball, and call itself Baseball Weekly again. Granted, it won't sell as well, but I do feel there is a market for baseball periodicals that, aside from Baseball America, is quite bare lately.

If I want to read brief articles covering multiple sports, I'll pick up The Sporting News or Sports Illustrated. That market is more cluttered than the baseball periodical market, and thus a return to it's baseball-only roots doesn't seem that ridiculous to me.

This week's Baseball Weekly had a preview of the Top 25 NCAA teams. During football season there is less baseball coverage, but during baseball it changes to more baseball. It's not bad for $1.50.

I've been a subscriber since 1996. I too was upset when they added football but I've never considered cancelling. I ignored the NASCAR coverage and I'm glad it's gone. The one thing that still bugs me is that football ALWAYS gets the cover nowadays (even during the f'n World Series!) I understand that football sells but they should at least stick to their roots a little bit. I agree with you but I'm never ever going to cancel my subscription!

hmm, I always wondered what had happened to Baseball Weekly, though I kinda thought Sports Weekly looked similar.
