Re: Mo No More?
Let's be practical here. Rivera probably wants one last big payday and even if it's a short term deal that's still a slight risk to take. Also keep in mind that Rivera will be 38 heading into '08 and that's pretty old for a pitcher especially a closer. Rivera has shown signs of being beatable in the last couple seasons and while emotions play a lot into it I think the Yanks would be better off looking for the next Rivera down the line.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

He has gone through short slumps just about every season in his career just now people make a big deal about them because he's older.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Mo No More?
This is something I can't see the Yankees getting wrong. Even at 38, he is easily the best closer in baseball. Emotions are not in that statement at all. I can't name one closer I would take today over Mo. I like other closers, but Mo is clearly top notch.
If he did go FA next year, I can see Boston throwing a 2 year, 30 million dollar contract at him.
Bottom line, this is one the Yanks can't screw up. Give him his money. He's been underpaid (in baseball terms) his whole career. Me being upset about them not bringing Bernie back is all about my emotion as a fan. Mariano is still the Yankees best/most needed player.Formerly Favre4vrComment

Re: Mo No More?
From Peter Abraham's blog:
I talked to some people who interviewed Mariano Rivera. His tone was not inflammatory at all. Just saying he’s going to do what he has to do, he wants to stay and the sides will talk. It’s the usual rhetoric.
There’s no cause for alarm – although I’m sure some headlines tomorrow won’t reflect that.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Mo No More?
The days of a player playing his whole career with one team are basically over. There is no loyalty from the players or the teams anymore and too much money being thrown around by other teams to convince players to stay in one place.Comment

Re: Mo No More?
Rivera with another statement saying that the Yankees are at no advantage if he doesn't have a contract in the offseason.

This really doesn't seem like something Rivera would do, I guarantee it's from the way that they have treated Bernie this offseason.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Thats unheard of.
If he becomes a free agent, I'll get a little worried, but until then no big deal. Remember, waiting until after the season doesn't mean they are waiting until free agency. There's still that 2 or so week period after the year where we are the only team that can negotiate with him, so I'd imagine they would get a deal done then. That's what they did with Mussina this year. If this was another team I'd be a little worried, but I know the Yankees won't be cheap about it.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment
