Say a pitcher throws one over the catcher's head to the backstop and the batter is dumb enough to swing at it for a third strike. Why should a batter be rewarded for swinging and missing? That's just ridiculous IMO.
On the flip side, why should the pitcher be rewarded for throwing such a horrible pitch (ie: one to the backstop)? Technically the ball is still in play as it hasn't been received for an out yet.

The reason for the rule is that a defensive player must field the ball to record an out. A dropped 3rd strike doesn't require for that to happen.

I see your point, but I still don't like the rule. We'll agree to disagree on this one.

I'm really interested to see how the "20 to 12" rule is implemented. I'm a fan of efficiency...especially being a fan of the Braves where games pitched by Maddux and Glavine would routinely be done in 2.5 hours or less in some cases.

Its would be weird, but couldn't they just put up a pitch clock behind home plate, like basketball. Then you wouldn't have to worry about ambigui......you know what i mean

I'll believe these rules when they're enforced. I remember reading how in the late '80s the umpires were told to enforce the balk rule more and they did so. Well balks dramatically jumped from the previous year. There was bitching and moaning from the pitchers and the enforcement of the rule was quietly pushed asside.

I doubt these rules will stick around past the All Star Break. That is, if they even enforce it.
