    MLB GameDay Audio... worth $15?

MLB.com has the following Audio/Visual offerings this year.

I was intending to get MLB Extra Innings, but am a Comcast subscriber, and thus unable to as a result of the exclusive deal with DirectTV.

MLB.com's video packages are more expensive, and I am still unsure whether I can justify spending $90-120 for streamed PC-only content.

However, their GameDay Audio package is just $15 and includes access to the 2006 archives, live spring training coverage, and the ability to listen to, and select, the home/away feeds for every 2007 game, without any blackout restrictions. This seems like a great deal, and one I am likely to take advantage of.

I am curious if anyone else has subscribed to MLB GameDay Audio in the past, and what their experiences were? I'd also be interested in whether anyone intends to subscribe to it this year as well.

The video subscriptions are certainly fair game for discussion in this thread also, but I'm primarily concerned with the GameDay Audio package at this time; which is also included with either video subscription.

I would wait until the DirectTV thing goes down. I think I just read something about an antitrust lawsuit coming against the deal. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html

I've gotten it the last two years. It's great for listening at work ... I like the rhythm of baseball broadcasts while I work ... even if it's not the out of market ChiSox playing. You can usually choose from the two announcing crews ... I listened to 05 World Series and playoff games up until the regular season in 2005.

If you can visualize what's going on in baseball just by listening, Gameday Audio is WELL worth it.

I've been a subscriber for the past 3 years, and will be subscribing again. See, I'm a Cub fan who lives in MO, and in recent years a lot of the Cubs games have moved to the more local stations like Fox Sports Chicago. With Gameday Audio I can still follow any of the games, and while I do enjoy watching baseball, listening on radio doesn't take much away from my enjoyment. And for what I am missing from not watching, the various internet apps like MLB Gameday and Sportsline make up for it.

I can't really afford the cost of MLB TV for a whole year, but $15 to listen to any game in the whole season is well worth it to me.

I get gameday audio every year. It's great for listening at work, especially since they started doing those Thursday travel day afternoon games last year. A lot of times, the Cubs are the only option during the rest of the week but I don't mind listening to whatever game is on.

The Direct TV deal begins in 2009 if it goes through. They were talking about it on the MLB XM channel the other day.

I got it for the first time last year because at $15 I figured it was too good to pass up, and it was great. You can choose to listen to any game going on that night and you can choose between the home, away, or spanish broadcast. I used to have a game or two on in the background each night. To answer your question, I felt it was well worth it!

Well this little post just sent me into a fit since I just signed up for mlb.tv a week ago. Needless to say, I called Comcast to ask about it and the guy told me they DID NOT have the package. "No, DirectTV signed a 3 year exclusive rights deal."

I mentioned some rumors that I'd heard (starting in 2009, government injunctions, etc) and he said "No, the deal is signed and we've been told we do not have the package."

So, there you go. Take it for what it's worth.

Hmm, interesting. It's still listed on the InDemand website...

                  As well as Dish Network

Weird. Well, on XM last week, they were saying it's not supposed to go into effect until 2009. I guess we'll find out shortly.

It was my understanding that the Extra Innings deal was to take effect immediately, but that they won't begin airing the MLB Network until 2009. I dunno, but that could be where the confusion comes from...

Back to MLB Radio, I had it last year and in my opinion $15 was a bargain. Without Extra Innings this year, though, I'll probably go with MLB.tv.

I didn't get it last year but at only $15 for every game.. I'm definitely going to be picking up the GameDay Audio.

"MLB may drop plans to offer controversial DirectTV Deal" - CNNMoney (2/27/2007 6:37am EST)

One source familiar with negotiations said he now believes that the Extra Innings package will remain available to all three services.

"I'd be surprised if the DirecTV deal goes through," he said.

The most interesting part of the article for me was:

The key isn't likely to revolve around more money, but an agreement by the cable operators to provide broader carriage for a Baseball Network which MLB intends to start operating in 2009.

DirecTV had been willing to let all 15 million of its subscribers have the new Baseball Network right from the start, as well as helping with some of the start-up costs, according to multiple sources. It isn't willing to be as helpful to MLB's upstart network if it doesn't gain the advantage of an exclusive deal on Extra Innings, though.

But after initially rebuffing the MLB demands for carriage of the Baseball Network, the cable operators are now coming around, according to the industry source.

"There will be a commitment to carry the Baseball Network (on cable)," said the industry official. "Where it will be placed, that still needs to be sorted out."
It seems it's all or nothing for cable subscribing baseball fans.. If we get the baseball channel, we get MLB Extra Innings. Or we get neither.

If Extra Innings is available on cable, I will subscribe again. I still consider MLB GameDay audio to be worthwhile regardless.

With Spring Training games starting today, I am having a hell of a time finding out how to listen to them. Every link I click takes me to a schedule, where the games are listed, but I only see a MLBTV link, and upon clicking that I'm taken back to the promotional page for potential buyers. Maybe it's too soon, as the first official game doesn't start until 1:05, but I'm running in circles here in the meantime.

EDIT: I found the link to access the game broadcasts. It can be found HERE.

If you buy a copy of MLB 2k7 from best buy you get two free weeks on MLBtv. It has to be redeemed by 6/24/07. I'm gonna activate mine once the season starts.
