My point is if the likes of Redman get a minor league deal, Marquis should be so lucky.

Marquis might have been the worst starting pitcher in the league last year (with strong consideration given to Carlos Silva).

No kidding, Marquis' agent is a hustler of immense proportions.

Redman was awful in 2005, in 2006 he was the best pitcher on a really bad team. Interestingly he was one of two pitchers to lead his team in starts without making 30 starts last season.

It does surprise me a little that it took injuries to other players for Redman and Steve Trachsel to get signed. I guess even with all the money that was thrown around teams thought that these guys were too "pricey". I mean c'mon, Sidney Ponson got signed before these guys.

As for Marquis and his big salary: just wait until the wind starts blowing out at Wrigley and the other team starts launching balls out as if it were batting practice, then we'll see if the Cubs still think he is worth the money.

2005 pitching for the Pirates he had an era of 4.90.

Last year pitching for the Royals he had an era of 5.71.

True, his ERA was higher because he allowed 9 more Earned Runs in '06 than he did in '05. He was by no means great last year but his Win total was doubled (11 in '06, 5 in '05) while his Loss total went down (10 in '06, 15 in '05).

I don't feel like starting a debate about how a pitcher's W/L record is possibly the most overrated stat in baseball, and an awful indicator of how well a pitcher performed.

Redman wasn't very good in 2005, and was absolutely horrendous last year, I'll leave it at that.

Redman was actually pretty good last year so I don't know how you can say he was horrendous. Did you forget that he won 11 games for a team that lost over 100 games? That in itself tells you that if nothing else he was atleast decent.

The guy who says that the W/L record is overated is going to bring up ERA...another overated stat.

Now Redman's WHIP went to nearly 1.5 in 06 but in 05 it was 1.3. To me that can be attributed to just going from NL to AL. I say Hampton takes longer than expected and Redman gets 7 wins for Atlanta and his WHIP back to 1.3 area. All in all he will pitch well and fine for a guy who be the number 5.

                      ERA isn't needed...

3rd worst QS% in the MLB
Worst K/BB rate in the MLB (1.21)
4th worst K/9 in the MLB
3rd worst WHIP in the MLB (1.59 YUCK)
6th worst BAA in the MLB
3rd worst OBP in the MLB
14th worst SLG in the MLB (hooray, something he isn't in the bottom 10)

Oh and just for the heck of it, he had the 6th worst ERA+ in the MLB.

I am not trying to say the guy is good or anything. Have you looked at his numbers when he was in the NL? I have not but I would say in 05 his numbers were a lot better and he was in the NL. I agree with you in that people bringing up he was an all-star is a joke. MLB has a rule one from each team. But you can't deny that ERA is an overated stat, you agree?
