    Cathedrals of Summer ...... Ballparks

Of the 4 major sports in North America ( hockey , baseball , football , basketball ) the playing surface has more of an impact on the game in baseball than all of the others. The variety and unpredictability is exhibited in the ballparks and each one has its own personality , its own story and own memories.
A basketball player in the NBA shoots a 23 foot jump shot in any arena in the country and the team gets 3 points. A football player in the NFL runs 100 yards and the team gets 6 points. But a baseball player hits a 350 foot drive to right field , then.... well , it's not so simple : If he is standing in Yankee stadium he has just earned his team a run ; if he is in Wrigley field he cost his team an out. You see the peculiar characteristics of a ballpark can have a profound effect on the game . And that is why I love to see games get not only the ballparks correct , but to create atmosphere such as varied attendence , sprcific ballpark sounds like the train in Safco , the big apple in NY , you get the idea here. The Detroit Tigers were fomous for soaking the infield at Tiger Stadium for bunts by Ty Cobb , they called it Cobbs lake.

As for the current upcoming baseball games we are all anticipating this spring , I like to see some ballparks of the earlier years like the Polo Grounds were the centre field was 500 feet away. How about Grifith Stadium in Washington where Yankee Slugger Mickey Mantle hit the longest shot in Major league history at 565 feet. And who could forget Ebbets field. I am amazed at all the new balparks that went up since the 90's with all of them going the retro style, instead of the cookie cutters of the 70's. The new parks like Camden yards , Ballpark in Arlington , Comerica , all look truely beautiful in keeping with the retro parks.

Some one once said that " sitting behind home plate in tiger Stadium is the closest in all of the parks in the Majors. One could understand how you cannot hit a good changeup because your norons will not allow you to hit that changeup after a fastball. "
So while we are waiting for our favorate baseball games to come out , I figured I lend some info to you on ballparks. Hope you enjoyed it .

    Take Care ,
