This Week in Baseball on ESPN Classic

ESPN Classic is showing This Week in Baseball on weekdays at 2:00 PM ET.

    From WikiPedia:

This Week in Baseball is a weekly television program, originally designed to show highlights of the previous week's Major League Baseball action.

TWIB (the acronym is often familiarly used by viewers, and came to be used by the host also) debuted in 1977. Veteran sportscaster Mel Allen hosted and narrated the show from its inception until his death in 1996 (although Warner Fusselle filled-in for Allen when needed); he was succeeded for a time by former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith.
The general consensus is that Mel Allen was the foundation of the show's success, and while the show is still aired Saturdays on FOX, the older shows were quite popular as a result of there not being 24 hour sports news channels covering every single game, play, etc.

For me, the re-airs are an opportunity to familiarize myself with baseball in an era before my time. For instance, today's episode is from April, 1978. It's only a half hour show, but if watched enough, it should provide some nice exposure to baseball's earlier years.

That was a great show, too bad I don't have Classic. During the summer when I move back home I'll have it at least. Thanks for the info.

I love TWIB - the older ones at least. Now they seem more tailored to kids, which I think is possitive, because we need to have our youth become more interested in baseball.

I'm looking forward to watching some of the older tapes. Thanks for the heads-up!

TWIB was great in the glory days. I don't think Mel Allen would've liked the dumbing down of the show but I think he'd support the notion that it helps to keep kids interested in the game which is very neccesary.

I love watching old tape of TWIB as it's kinda nostalgic and you get a good grasp of the way the game was played just 25-30 yrs ago.
