The general consensus is that Mel Allen was the foundation of the show's success, and while the show is still aired Saturdays on FOX, the older shows were quite popular as a result of there not being 24 hour sports news channels covering every single game, play, etc.
For me, the re-airs are an opportunity to familiarize myself with baseball in an era before my time. For instance, today's episode is from April, 1978. It's only a half hour show, but if watched enough, it should provide some nice exposure to baseball's earlier years.

Veteran sportscaster Mel Allen hosted and narrated the show from its inception until his death in 1996 (although Warner Fusselle filled-in for Allen when needed); he was succeeded for a time by former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith.
