Who would have ever thought the voice of espn baseball and 2K's baseball video game couldn't even stay in the same hotel as his teammates when he first got into the league.

Missing the message
I'm reading different posts by some of you guys and it seems you all are missing the message of the day. This is Jackie Robinson's day and that's that. Listen to the stories being told. Things that are nothing but paragraphs in history books to you guys are being told from firsthand sources. People who are ALIVE and telling you how it was and to some point how it still is.

Re: Missing the message
Honestly? The little graphic at the beginning of the Dodgers/Padres game said it all -- they were talking with all these humongous names in Baseball history -- it is definitely something to perk up and take notice of. Hell, at times the game has been secondhand to the discussions going on in the booth -- how many times in a DECADE can you say that? This is Jackie's day, and honestly I can't wait for the new movie -- however...
...I just found it slightly offensive and overly corny that they changed the lyrics to "Oh Happy Day" and replaced Jesus with Jackie....that felt like it detracted more from the importance of the day than it aided it, you know? it felt cheap and wrong. That's all I was trying to point out. -
Re: Missing the message
Don't want to get into a big thing here but trust me, to ALOT of people at that time this rendention (sp) of the song is more than appropriate and that's exactly how millions of blacks felt in america at that time and to some today. Keep in mind with all the atrocious acts being inflicted on blacks at the time some may have believed in Jesus but they SAW Jackie.Comment

Re: Missing the message
My two cents: There is no way anybody should be critical of yesterday's ceremonies. Nothing was corny or overdone. Holy cripes, what this man had to endure to be a Major League Ballplayer. How this scared institution of Major League Baseball would actually have settled for the practice of segregation and then sit back and allow maltreatment of the African American ballplayers to come after Mr. Robinson. I remember reading Bob Gibson's book when I was a kid, and being appauled by how he had to eat in the back of restaurants and not being able to stay in the same hotel as his white teammates. I think every April 15th should be Jackie Robinson Day for baseball. Not because it is politically correct, because it is the right thing to do. This is one day that must be sacred.Comment

Re: Missing the message
I may be way off here but why is everyone upset that only 8% of all major league players are african americans? The current % of the American population who are african american is around 9 or 10. Throw in all the players from the far east and latin america who are playing baseball and trying to get to the big leagues and I would say 8% is actually pretty good.
Shouldnt the percent of Major League players reflect the american population?ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment
