    Jeff Weaver

    Jeff Weaver
My sources tell me Weaver will be DFA'd sometime this week (possibly even today) by the Mariners. The Cardinals will probably pick him up, with the M's eating the majority of his salary.

The Cards believe they see an easily correctable mechanical flaw in Weaver and once it is fixed, he will be effective as he was in the playoffs for them last year.

Cards fans and non-Cards fans alike, what do you think about acquiring Weaver again? Can the Cards fix him once again to make him the new ace until Carp gets back or did they get lucky last year?

I'm a Cards fans and I'm not sure how I feel. Pitching Coach Dave Duncan is a genius and I wouldn't put this past him... but Weavers confidence might be damaged beyond repair.

    BRING HIM BACK!

I don't expect him to be the dominating pitcher he was last postseason, but he really did play a lot better here after Duncan had some time to work with him, bring him back and throw him in the rotation, with Carp out for a while might as well.

What is there to lose? This team isn't going anywhere right now anyway. It'd be one thing if his arrival in St. Louis would block an opportunity for one of the young guys to step in, but Narvy is hurt and Hawsworth isn't showing that he wants to come up.

Well Weaver was placed on the DL today (another phantom injury similar to Preston Wilson and Wade Miller). This makes more sense as the M's will likely wait to part with him until Felix comes back.

What about Thompson? I don't necessarily like him as a starter but he put in good work the other day and I'd say he deserves to start until he gives the team a reason not to start him. Hawksworth is having a good year in AAA.. ERA of 3 but I'm in agreement with you, I don't think he's quite ready.

I'd just hate to get rid of another good prospect for him if he doesn't pan out. Terry Evans, the guy we got rid of for him last year is batting over 300 and has 10 stolen bases. I'm not complaining bc Weaver helped us get a World Series.

All in favor of re-acquiring Weaver. First, I think he might have just learned his lesson out in Seattle. Plus, the Cards need a 5th starter. They're already on their 7th option and their 8th (Chris Narveson) just got injured (credit lboros).

The Cardinals are welcome to have him; Weaver has been a disaster so far in Seattle. Not much is expected out of a #5 starter except to give his team a chance to win it and every time Weaver leaves the mound the M's are in a deep hole.

The info I got about Weaver was from lboros as well. My mistake for not posting that in the original post.

We=genius if we fix this, and he ends up coming back to his post season success. He would be ******** not to come back to the Cards if it's true, because thats the only place he's pitched really well or above mediocrity. Mariners=******s for giving him so much, because he thought he was untouchable, and when he has a terrible pitching coach, he just goes back to his old ways.

The fact that anybody but the Cardinals gave this guy a job is beyond me. He's been shelled everywhere he's gone except for last year's playoffs and his brief stint with the Dodgers. Even in Detroit, when he was first noticed as a potential above average pitcher, he never claimed more wins than losses and his ERA hovered around 4 in a big ballpark. I'd like to see what the Cards could do with him, but the way I see it, it can't get much worse for Weaver.

Ya, and we have nothing to lose, we seen his potential, and worse comes to worse, we can just release him. You got to give him 8 starts though, it will take him a while to get the confidence back, but I think stl is the only place where he can feel confortable for his bad start, because the fans will cheer, and won't take it too seriouslay how he starts pitching, because they seen his improvement last season.

I will laugh my *** of, if we give you our wost triple a prospect or whatever, and Weaver turns into Cy Young form.

Even during last year's playoffs, he wasn't Cy Young caliber... very good, yes, but not Cy Young.

What I'm trying to say is... no chance.

Terrible pitching coach? Give 'im some credit, he's done his best to keep Felix from doing too much at a young age in order to ensure his future health and success -- nobody is saying the guy is a genius, but he's not an idiot. I think the issue here is that if Weaver can even be "fixed", he needs a really good pitching coach to work with him. Seeing as how you guys have turned a career reliever -- Braden Looper -- into a respectable starting pitcher, I would think Weaver would probably be happiest back in St. Louis.

But yeah...it's not the Mariner's fault that Weaver isn't a good enough pitcher on his own.
