Re: The Official Barry Bonds Home Run Countdown

I love how Barry gets all the hate, when Bud knew about steroids in baseball a heck of a long time ago and never did anything to stop it. He allowed them in the game to bring fans back to the park and now wont even go see the monster he created break the most famous record in sports.

    Hypocrite.

Is Selig on SportsCenter every night?

Is he half as visible as Bonds is?

The only way to get rid of this whole steroid crap is to MOVE ON.

Accept that it happened. Accept that everyone failed. Accept that Selig and Co. turned a blind eye to all of it.

Work to make it better, and MOVE ON.

That said, as I said in the other thread, I don't believe that steroids help hitting home runs, but people posted numbers and all of that in an attempt to prove me wrong. Either way, I believe what I believe.

Then we should accept all of the bad things in the world instead of trying to make them better... is that what you're trying to get at, Matrix?

Re: The Official Barry Bonds Home Run Countdown

Steroids are not like everything else in this world.

Besides that, I never said let's not make it better. What I mean by moving on is accept that it's happened and accept that people's ineptitude led to all of this. Work to make it better but don't go on witchhunts and live in the past.

Implement even better drug policies, and get people to test for HGH. I know that might not happen because of blood tests and all of that, but there's no sense in living in the past.

Use the past to make the future better.

Well, couldn't MLB find the people that were inept and eliminate those people?

Then again, that would eliminate Selig... which wouldn't be a bad thing... hmm... you're onto something, Matrix.

That just doesn't make sense though. The main factor in hitting homeruns is power. Steroids help guys get bigger muscles, and increase their POWER. How anyone can say they don't believe steroids help hit homeruns...

Actually I believe that's a Barry Bonds quote.

Not necessarily. The reason why we don't see big designated hitters built like that guy from Rookie of the Year is because too much muscle mass can slow them down so very much. Push and drive comes from the arms, yes... but bat speed comes from the legs, if the swing is fundamentally proper. Any good hitting coach would teach a player to hit without even starting with a bat, because the lower body (mostly the hips) is so much more important when it comes to hitting a baseball. As a matter of fact, even the eyes are more important than the hands.

I don't know where I quoted myself about how to explain "drive", but eventually there is a limit. It's like freezing point or terminal velocity. Eventually, more muscle won't necessarily add onto that "drive", and the rest comes from bat speed.

And I'm guessing that most players that took steroids decided to then rely on arm strength to hit the ball out. You know what that does? Ask Alfonso Soriano when he was one home run away from becoming the first player with 40/40/40 in HR/SB/2B. Over-extension, rolling over, chasing the outside pitches... it makes you have a different approach, and many can't handle it. He is a steroid-less case, but he is a case of somebody that tried too much to hit a ball out when they thought that they could give themselves a better chance to. Bonds never changed his swing, and probably made it even better throughout the years. Other players that took steroids would think that their muscle mass would take care of the equation, when it obviously doesn't.

There are lurking variables in what good and bad effects steroids do to a hitter's performance. Honestly, the only legitimate effect I have heard so far was that it keeps you playing longer and fatigue less, and I don't even know if that's true.

Well, I still think the main thing for hitting a baseball is hand-eye coordination and bat-speed. He's been making people pay with both of these for two decades now, not just the last seven years.

And yes, I know, people will say "Well he hasn't been doing it at this level."

To that, I say maybe so, but correlation doesn't always mean causation. Maybe it's me being naive, but really, I don't think it is. It's not like I'm defending my favorite player or anything.

I wonder why they take steroids, if it doesn't help. Maybe they just like having shrunken balls.

A lot of people take steroids for recovery purposes.

I've never heard of anyone taking anabolic steroids for recovery purposes.

Plus that makes no sense for a baseball player to do. If their only goal is to recover from an injury, I doubt they'd put their careers on the line by taking banned substances.
