Re: Will Slugfest Rule The Roost Again?
The trend is trying to satisfy the most gamers. Us (vast majority of the people on this site) hardcore gamers in overall numbers is relatively small.
Baseball is one of those sports that not a lot of people take vast interest in anymore. Too many recent years of sub par baseball games, other then a mild exception. They need a gimick to keep it interesting. Thats where Slugfest came in. It also is something that can be picked up with little to no knowledge of the rules themselves, which appeals to the young gamers such as my son who is 9. He enjoyed Slugfest the most because of all the extras involved.
Now what NCAA 2003 did with the mascots is they also drew in my son who was attracted to the playing as the mascot options. Madden drew him in with the fantasy type teams as well. What has baseball offered to draw in the casual gamer? Nothing. Slugfest was an original on the next generation consoles. There have been games in the past similiar to Slugfest and those also did well.
Midway knows they have a formula that works for pick up and go action. With what they did with Hitz they found that they can put some length into the title as well and see success.
As long as the gamers stay young there will always be a market for the wild type sports games that bend the rules from slightly to the boundries of completely ridiculous.
I for one even being a hardcore sports gamer enjoy these as well. Probably not a good thing in the overall scope, but if I stop getting my realistic fix, I will eventually get tired of the ridiculous as well. Blitz has run its course, it needs a new gimick. Slugfest without some major additions for longevity will also run its course very quick as well. Hitz was a breakthrough because it succeeded in drawing in a lot of hardcore sim freaks like myself.
In the end though I will always take the franchise capabilities of the more realistic game types way over Slugfest for the longterm. -
