Is he worth $20 million per? He is currently getting paid $12.5 million. By comparison, in recent signings, Barry Zito got $18, Soriano got $10, JD Drew got $14, Pettitte got $16, Thome got $15.... Is he more valuable than those guys? I think so.

What is Ichiro worth?
There is an article in the local paper as to what Ichiro's price range would be on the open market. What do you guys think? He turns 34 in October, so he is definitely on the decline. But what value do you put on a guy who will hit .330/.375/.440/.810, will steal 35, plays gold glove defense, and has shown no signs of decline?

Re: What is Ichiro worth?
If someone like Drew gets 14, then Ichiro will get that and probably much more. You've gotta remember that Ichiro is more than just a player, but the money/attention he brings outside the US is big time.I do because I can, I can because I want, I want because you say I can'tComment

Re: What is Ichiro worth?
The Mariners need to pay him whatever he wants to keep him here. He's the face of the franchise and losing him would take away a ton of the fans that he brings in himself, in my opinion.Comment

Re: What is Ichiro worth?
Ichiro is worth whatever contract he gets just because of the media attention he draws. People in Japan are still in love with him, and pay attention the Mariners just because of him.
Yes, he's 34, but even if his speed starts to "decline", his ability to hit the ball is not going to go away. He'll be at least a .320 hitter for the rest of his career.
I'd give him 5 years, 80 million since a lot of that money is going to end up coming back to them by way of the revenue created anyway.Comment

Re: What is Ichiro worth?
There's no sign whatsoever yet of Ichiro losing a step and he keeps himself in phenomenal condition. The guy is just a hitting machine, he almost never gets caught stealing, and plays a phenomenal CF. It's going to cost $15-20 million a year to sign him, and it will probably be at the upper end of that range. Now that the Mariners are winning again I think the odds are good he'll resign with the M's.Comment

Re: What is Ichiro worth?
Call me crazy, but after this past off-season, I can see him getting 4 years, 20 mil per. Teams will say they may regret the last year or so, but the investment in the player and Japan will more than make up for it.Formerly Favre4vrComment

Just gotta wonder which team he will sign with. I wish the Giants would pick him up next season because of what he brings, and they have no problem signing guys his age.NBA 2K11 My Player: 6'11 Athletic Center/PF 58ovr Rockets

Yeah, and like every other guy his age not named Bonds he'd hit the snag in his career.Comment

Re: What is Ichiro worth?
Here's an interesting economic story about Ichiro that I think might relate. According to a sports business site it seems Ichiro has 50 million dollars on the table when it comes to North American endorsement deals. The reason being is that he's not comfortable with putting himself out there for the North American ad market mainly because of his poor english and such. He does make a boatload in endorsement money in Japan tho.
So maybe he won't take the biggest deal on the table if he chooses to go elsewhere after this season.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
