    ESPN Player Ratings

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playerrating

Looks like ESPN has finally turned toward sabermetrics to rate the players. They also predict who should make the All Star team with their ratings. Too bad those teams will never happen though.

It'd be nice if MLB ever decides to put players statistics near their name on the online voting like the NFL does with their voting.

Looks to be the most ******** player evaluation tool of all time. It lost any credibility with me when I saw ERA and Wins account for 60% of a pitchers rating.

Also it seems the top 100 is kinda selective. I went to the Jays page and Alex Rios has a 42.2 rating yet he isn't in the top 100.

        pfft...

Oh yeah as for pitchers WHIP and K/BB ratio should have more accountability in the rating.

There is no way that you can have a scale with which to rate pitchers and hitters with, which is why I'm glad Baseball Prospectus has seperate VORP rankings for the two. It's also stupid to make team win/loss record a factor. The whole point of sabremetric type ratings is to qualify a player separate from his teammates.

Top five hitters matchup with VORP, then it gets crazy. And is it just me, or is Grady Sizemore not in the top 100? WTF?

            Re: ESPN Player Ratings

It's terrible, Grady and Travis both have pretty good "ratings" according to ESPN that easily puts them in the top 50 players yet they both don't show up in the Top 100?

And James Shields at 3 for pitchers and 13 overall?!?!

Just awful... ESPN really missed the boat with these.

I know they only use it for a small percentage, but why do they use the team's win/loss record as one of the criteria. It's not like a single player will have and influence if the player is good or not. oh well, what can you expect it's ESPN.

I was looking at this the other day, there's like 8 mets on the top 100 list.
                  N.Y Mets
                  N.Y Giants
                  N.Y Knicks
                  N.Y Islanders
                  Miami Hurricanes

The silly thing about that is they include opportunity based stats like Wins, Runs, RBI's, things you get more chances at if you're on a good team. Then they give another bonus for winning pct.
