No word yet on what the Marlins got back, but it won't be much. The Cubs are likely covering a large portion of the roughly $9 million Jones is owed through 2008. It's still a nice pickup for Florida. Jones isn't a great defender in center, but he can handle the position and he will start hitting. To pick up such a solid stopgap at what is almost surely very little cost is a nice feat for GM Larry Beinfest.

Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
I'm glad he's gone. He wasn't helping the team considering he was below-average defensively, his arm was about as strong as a wet noodle, and he couldn't hit lefties at all.Originally posted by billmaticRadman is more like the ******** homeless man's version of Okur. -
Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
Very glad we finally got rid of him.
Hopefully we will get one of their many good pitching prospects they have stockpiled back in return. We better get atleast one decent prospect back in return. Especially since the Cubs are picking up most of his salary."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
Doesn't make sense that it would be money. The Cubs almost have no choice but to get rid of Jones because of roster limitations.
They need to dump him. This is probably more about the player to be received."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
I can't imagine that the Marlins would give up a top-level prospect for Jones, but they've got so many good young arms in their system. Getting a guy like Chris Volstad is wishful thinking, but who knows?Originally posted by billmaticRadman is more like the ******** homeless man's version of Okur.Comment

Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
A similar situation occurred between the Yankees and the Angels. The Yankees had inquired about Shea Hillenbrand, knowing that Angels are trying to move Hillenbrand the Yankees practically demanded that the Angels pay basically all of Hillenbrand's contract.
We know what the answer was since Hillenbrand is still with the Angels.Comment

While it probably was about the player that would have been headed to the Cubs--it could have been about money. The Cubs probably have no desire to pay Jones to play in Florida and we know that the Marlins are not going to pick up the remaining $9 million on his contract for the next year and a half.

It didn't happen and I wouldn't put it entirely on money."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
Jones was just a terrible signing for the cubs last year, I swear they were just signing random solid players, it seemed like someone who was trying to stack his team in a video game. They didn't need him.Comment

Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
They didn't need him this year after they signed Soriano and Floyd and brought Pie up. They will trade him, there are going to be teams interested. The Mets have been looking for another left-handed bat off the bench, the Padres are still trying to find a solution in LF, i wouldn't even rule out a return to Minnesota if the deal was right.Comment

Re: Jacque Jones to Marlins
They put Dempster on the DL, so they no longer needed to immediately trade Jones to free up a roster spot. That said, though, they've been trying to trade him since last winter, and they'd still like to free up his roster spot. He'll be gone sooner rather than later, I suspect.Comment
