    Re: JJ Putz

He just put down the BoSox 1-2-3 in the 9th including a strikeout of Big Papi on nothing but fastballs. That makes Big Papi 0 for 5, with 5 k's in his career against Putz.

You never know how long closers are going to last, but Putz is pretty damn fun to watch right now.

Wow, 8 game winning streak at home against Boston. I'd never have thunk it in a million years.

Just got back from Safeco. Awesome game. I didn't think we had a shot with Dice-K bringing his "A" game against our rookie but the M's hung in there. JJ was lights out again in the ninth and his ERA is under 1.00 now. It was fun to see JJ go power vs. power against Big Papi and win the battle.

And I was very happy to see the Red Sox bring in the Pinata in the 11th.

Career numbers are pretty meaningless for Putz, who was nothing more than an average hard-throwing middle reliever until Guardado taught him the splitter last season. Before that, he couldn't control anything but the fastball, so hitters could just sit on it.

Yeah, I remember a couple of years ago it seemed like JJ would always strike out the first couple of guys and then surrender a home run or a big hit. Everyone would just sit on the fastball. Gotta thank Everyday Eddie for that splitter.

Just saw JJ Putz has a LOB percentage of 101% heading into the break. That is amazing, especially considering the numerous times he's been brought in during the 8th inning with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs.

Papbelbon/Okajima are about as dominate as a setup/closer combo can come...

That aside, yes JJ is the most dominate closer RIGHT now...

I know all of JJ's numbers this year are ridiculous, but how do you have a 101% LOB percentage?

Getting extra credit for holding baserunners on belonging to the previous pitcher. If those inherited runners score it doesn't hurt his LOB%.

JJ is starting to get some love from the national media now with articles in Sports Illustrated and USA Today.

Meanwhile he just got his 29th straight save of the season tonight against Toronto and his numbers are just getting silly: 0.78 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, .173 OBA.

And then he met Ramon Vazquez. A career .256 hitter with 11 HRs in 1310 at bats, gets #12 off the second coming of Jesus. C'mon guys. Every year a closer has an amazing year. Turnbow had a great year in '05. And everyone knows about Lidge. Closers come and go every year.

2-0 count in Texas, 94 mph fastball down the middle...

He's having an amazing year but he was bound to make a mistake at some point with how many fastballs he throws down the middle. I don't think he took Vazquez seriously at all.
