    Reds fire Jerry Narron

Narron out, Pete Mackanin in as interim skipper for the Reds. According to Reds beat report C. Trent Rosencrans.

Peter Mackanin, Jr. (born August 1, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois) is a former Major League Baseball player and current coach.

Mackanin was drafted by the Washington Senators in the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft and made his debut with them in 1973, after they'd moved and become the Texas Rangers. In a 9-year career, he also played for the Montréal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, and Minnesota Twins. In 548 games, he had a batting average of .226, 355 hits, 30 home runs, and 141 RBI.

After retiring as a player, Mackanin spent many years managing and coaching in the minor leagues. He became the Expos' Third Base Coach in 1997 and spent four years in that position. After returning to minor league managing for two years, he became Bench Coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2003 season. He served as interim Manager of the Pirates for the last month of the 2005 season, leading the team to a 12-14 record. He is currently the Advance Scout for the Cincinnati Reds.

He is a graduate of Brother Rice High School in Chicago.

Just heard about this. Talking to a friend right now about it. He made some weird moves in games but 100% of the blame can't be placed on him. The bullpen has been garbage. I really think the players just aren't able to respond to him anymore. Also, as highly as I think of Krivsky, he built this team. Narron could only use what Krivsky provided to him. Have no idea what will happen with the team the rest of the season. 50+ losses in the first half of the season is unacceptable though.

He has no talent on his team. No manager could succeed there.

Two in one day. Different reasons, teams going different directions, but its still odd to have two new major league managers in one day.

Can't say that I'm surprised, but it's not really his fault. That bullpen, the poor situational hitting, I mean he was pretty hamstrung.

Still, I'm anxious to see what direction the Reds go in. They can't really get any worse.

Narron overused his bullpen. He had no idea how to construct a lineup and I will agree that he didn't have a whole lot to work with. With that said, they are a better team than 31-51. Adam Dunn is having a great year and Jr. has been mashing for a while now. No talent is no excuse. Dunn, Jr., Hamilton, Phillips, Edwin, Hatteberg, and Gonzalez has played pretty well too. It's Narron's over working of the entire pitching staff that has got him in such a mess.

The Reds are a bad team, but not this bad. I hope Krivsky has Davey Johnson on his radar.

when you pinch hit Juan Castro for Josh Hamilton, your days are numbered. Narron is a great guy, but he is no Major League manager.

His lineups really puzzled me as well. Sometimes watching Reds games I thought he basically just pulled names out of hat to produce his lineup.

Talking to a buddy of mine in Philly and told him this, his first question was is Hamilton hurt, when I responded no, his next comment was, Narron should'nt even be allowed to manage a Little league game after that move.

                    LOL

His overuse of the bullpen, while not the best pen in the world, contributed in it's demise. When you have a pen full of rookies and vets who are aged, don't keep putting them in a position to fail, like trotting out Coffey, or Coutlangous, or pick your name, every game. You pitch 6 games in a row, get tired, get lit up, your confidence has a tendency to waiver a bit, and Narron kept throwing them out there, and then leaving the pitchers in too long is a whole other discussion.

Be interesting to see what happens now.

So is this the 3rd manager in a row fired? Boone, Miley and Narron?

They should fire the pitching coach and replace about 90% of the pitchers on the team. Narron is just a scapegoat.

Well of course they have talent. Pretty much every team has talent. But how it plays together and off of each other is what differentiates the good clubs from the bad. Two years ago the Reds scored the most runs in MLB yet finished with a sub .500 record because they didn't hit well with two outs or runners in scoring position and they blew late leads.

Plus, Narron wouldn't have to overwork his bullpen if Lohse, Arroyo, Belisle, pretty much any SP besides Harang, hadn't so often given up like 7 or 8 runs before the 4th inning. Yes Narron was a bad manager, but the team didn't really help his cause.

I agree that the Reds are not nearly as bad as their record indicates. Before the season, I truly felt that if the hitters hit like they did last year, if Harang and Arroyo pitched like they did last year that we could patch together a bullpen and be OK with Weathers closing. I honestly thought that with a weak NL-Central, the Reds had an outside shot at the wild card. I was being optimistic. I've learned not to do that too much with this team.

He had plenty of talent on offense. They have put some runs up but the pitching sucks. Harang and Weathers have been solid. The rest of the staff is mentally shot. Man it sucks to be a Reds fan.
