    LaRussa to manage Reds?

Jason Stark was on the local sports radio today for about a 15 minute session. Among other things, the topic of the Reds managerial position was heavily discussed and he said that he doubts Cards skipper Tony LaRussa will return to St. Louis next season and wouldn't be surprised if he was hired by the Reds. Stark said he expects Mackanin to finish the season as interim manager.

Stark also said Bob Brenly has shown interest in the position and that the Reds would be interested in Joe Girardi (duh) if he would be interested (he won't).

I would like to have LaRussa but I just don't see how any of that possible. Stark must've been high or something.

Unless Pujols comes to Cincy with him, I don't think even TLR could have success with that team.

Also, I hope Brenly doesn't get the job. I like him announcing the Cubs games!

When the news first broke about Narron being canned, LaRussa's name was one of the first I saw that popped up. Castellini's connection to the Cards, having been a former minority owner of the team, is why people have talked about it. Supposedly Walt Jocketty's contract is up after this season and there is a rumor the Reds might go after him? Someone told me that this week. Have no idea if it's true. In all honesty, if there is an organization that Castellini wants to model his Reds after, I'm glad it's St. Louis. Someone needs to get in there and motivate these guys. Maybe LaRussa can be that guy. The team needs some changes.

Jockety is under contract for 2008. The rumor is that since ownership is kinda going in a direction that Jockety and LaRussa and Duncan don't really fit into (i.e., away from the crusty old baseball guys to a more sabermetric/player development system with Jeff Lunhow), it is rumored that Jockety will asked to be released from his contract and would then take LaRussa (who's in his last year under contract) with him.

I would assume if Cincinnati tried to hire Jockety, there'd be some compensation involved.

Well if LaRussa and Jocketty come to Cincy, that means Dave Duncan is too. And that's not something I'm wild about. Duncan is a good pitching coach but is horrible at developing young talent, which is pretty much all the Reds have.

Man if i'm Ted Rogers and Paul Godfrey i'd pull the trigger and get these guys. Jockety was one of the interviewees for the Jays job and I think it was a mistake on Godfrey's part to go with an unknown guy just because he bows at the altar of sabremetrics.

Sadly it's not going to happen.

Now if the Reds can get both guys then I think things could turn around pretty quickly for that organization.

Without a dependable, consistent #1 starter and a few less gas cans in the pen, the manager isn't going to matter for the Reds.

The one thing I can say about Tony is that he plays everyone and keep them fresh, he sometime goes by to much of the numbers. The reason he may leave, is because the ownership only cares about making money, and won't let Jocketty and Larussa do what they want.

I like how numerical he is. He has numbers for absolutely every situation. It takes emotion completely out of the game, so it's like a computer. It wouldn't work with every team, but it works in STL, and I hope he sticks around.

Can I answer? Because he didn't win the world series, the players did. The worst part, for me, about the Cards winning the WS last year was that I knew it meant that La Russa would be back. The years of the MV3 in StL are nearing an end, and an influx of new talent is necessary for this team to remain contenders. Tony and Dunc are not the men for that job, and I highly doubt that they would go somewhere that they'd be met with that situation. La Russa has said that his job isn't to teach, that's why his preference is for veteran players. While that has obviously been a winning formula for his tenure here in StL, the methods used to obtain those veteran players are now impossible. Our upper minors, the source of the talent that brought in McGwire, Edmonds, Finley, Rolen, etc. is barren of useful talent, and our payroll is right at the budget the owners have set for the year. I pray that our pitching talent in the lower minors never have to meet the end that Ankiel, Benes, and Reyes have met. If Cincy wants La Russa and his hetero-lifemate, they can have them.
