Montreal fan looking for a team

    Hi,
I'm 33 years old, from Montreal Quebec (Canada).
Since the departure of the Expos following the 2004 season I wasn't able to watch Major League Baseball.
But now, 3 years later, my love of the game seems bigger then the feelings I had toward the Expos moving to Washington.
I feel it's time for me to "get back into the game".
I had never tought of picking a new team before...and I feel that in order to be a real fan it is the team that has to choose you...and not the other way around.

So I sent a letter to every MLB team that goes like this:
"Baseball has always been my sport. I played it as a kid, on the diamond and on the street and I’m now teaching my three-year-old boy how to swing a bat, playing with him in our backyard. With no team here in Montreal now, I just hope he feels the same connection to the game that I did – but I recognize that this isn’t likely.

As a free agent fan. I’m hoping anyone from your organisation will convince me to root for your team. To attract me to a story that I can relate to. The most important thing to me is that I can identify with my new team in some way.

And just to make one thing clear here. I’m not looking to whore myself out – I don’t need your gear, tickets or team stuff. All I want is a good story, something compelling to choose from. All I really want is to buy a new hat, make the box scores matter again and give my kids a reason to love this game.

    Thanking you in advance"

I now plan on using a point system to pick my new team:
-5 pts to the first team that replies (4 to the 2nd and so on)
-5 pts to the team that sends the longer message (4 to the 2nd and so on)
-5 pts to the team with the best arguments as to why I should root for there team (4 to the 2nd and so on)
-5 pts to the smallest market team that replied (4 to the 2nd and so on)
-5 pts to the team closest to the city of Montreal (teams who replied) (4 to the 2nd and so on)
-2 pts bonus to teams who had good reports with either the city of Montreal of the Montreal Expos franchise

I will be posting the results and the standings as I receive reply from my message.

I might also give a team a couple of bonus points if any of you fans are able to "sell" me your team.

    Thanks for reading

Why not just be a Nationals fan?

Yeah you might as well stick w. the Nats. I don't see any other choices. When I was a kid I was a diehard Dolphins fan mostly because of Dan Marino. Once he retired my interest in the NFL greatly dwindled and two years ago I tried to become a Giants fan since most of my friends are.

I just couldn't do it - you can't fake that passion. It seems like all those choices are made when you're a child unless you're a bandwagoning idiot. Needless to say I could care less about the Giants and that attempt lasted two weekends.

Yeah, I'll tell you to root for your hometown team.

          Shocking, huh?

That's like telling a Brooklyn Dodger fan back in the day to root for LA. It's detestable.

Bullpen if you love baseball just be a fan of the game.

                There's always Toronto.

They're not that good but they're not that bad either.

Got my first answer today...from the Kansas City Royals

                    Here's there answer:

"Thank you for your interest in the Royals! Our blog is a good place to start if you are looking for a good story. Take a look on royals.com here for some of the latest happenings around the stadium:

That's not much ...but at least they responded...

So the Royals are leading right now...

There's a big rivalry between the city of Toronto and Montreal.

It would be hard to root for a Toronto team...

But I'm not taking them out yet...

I'm an MLB.COM subsriber...I can watch them all (there is no "blackout" in Montreal...except for the Blue Jays...and they play every game on TV here).

So watching the games is not a problem

I got my second response...from the Seattle Mariners...
                            here is the message

"Thanks for your e-mail. We are thrilled to have as many loyal and enthusiastic fans as we do and there is always room for more. However, we have never had to convince anyone to cheer for the Mariners; choosing a baseball team to root for is usually more of an emotional decision than a rational one, and there are a myriad of reasons that people become fans of a specific team.

As an organization, we place a high priority on responding to our fans and other people, so while we believe that the decision to become a fan is a personal one, we are happy to send specific information to anyone expressing interest in our team. We have an assortment of free literature that may be helpful to you (Ballpark A-Z Guide, Guide for Guests with Disabilities, information on assorted ticket plans, groups or suite sales, little fanpacks for our faraway fans, Transportation Guides, Pocket Schedules, etc.), and we’d be happy to send you any of that information if you provide us with your mailing address. Again, thanks for taking the time to contact us and expressing an interest in the Seattle Mariners."

Longer and more personnal then the Royals...

I'll put up the standings soon...

I think a lot of it depends on your taste.

Do you like NL or AL style of play (DH, no DH)?
Do you like Big Spenders or Build from Within teams?
Do you want a team that is good now or building for the future so you get in on the ground floor?
Do you prefer East Coast or West Coast? (Being from Montreal, if you don't plan on staying up late to watch games, I'd go more Eastern)
Do you want a team with a deep history or relatively new?
Do you have a favorite player or favorite former player? Perhaps that is a team you could follow.

I'm personally a NL guy and am a Pittsburgh Pirates fan (one of the few remaining). I'm from Pittsburgh so I've followed them for a while. I live in Boston now and follow the Red Sox, so I follow 2 teams on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

                              Good luck with your choice.

                              NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers
                              NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins
                              NBA: Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic
NCAA: Penn State Nittany Lions, Boston College Eagles
