Actually the acquisition this year that impresses me the most is the pick-up of Randall Simon from Detroit...

Getting Sanders at what they are paying is great value, but why even pay that when they know they aren't going to contend for anything? They could just throw a young guy or a stiff out there and it would have about the same effect on their win-loss record.

For a club that needs an extra bat or even some bench depth, Sanders would be perfect. But, seeing as how the Bucs aren't going anywhere anytime soon, it doesn't do anything other than supply the fans with a "name" player.

They could throw a young guy in there (Tony Alvarez), but they want to keep their young guys in the minors and give them time to develop. They really don't want to rush guys up to the majors (see Aramis Ramirez). So getting a guy like Sanders can hopefully help the offense this year until they can bring up some young guys next year.

Being a former Padre (1999 or the 2000 season), he did do pretty well with us. I'm sure he'll be very productive for the Pirates.

I'm pretty sure you'll see the Pirates making some waves this year, maybe not series bound, but waves... they've picked up Sanders, Simon, Suppan, potentially Lofton, not to mention good gloves in Wilson and Pokey, plus Giles is always a force, and depending on Hyzdu's role, he, too can be a potent bat... Fogg's solid for a 2nd year guy, Well's is pretty decent... to be honest, I have more faith in those two than I do Benson himself, he's been an injury-case since Day 1, if/when he plays on a regular basis, the faith will come, i'm sure.

Simon could be one hell of a player if he ever learns to take a pitch, he can put the bat on anything within 5 feet of the plate.

It amazes me that Pittsburgh will do everything in its power to stop Craig A Wilson from getting 500+ ABs. Sure I know that he will be used at 1b and C, both positions that he is more of a defensive liability then in one of the corners of the outfield. This guy was theri 2nd best hitter last season and deserves a shot to own one position on that team....

Reggie Sanders/Kenny Lofton....please, why dont they get smart and trade for one of Cincinnatis extra outfielders that is out of options??? Lets face it, Pittsburgh is not going to the playoffs, better off getting a Mateo or W.M.Pena in the lineup everyday then Sanders/Lofton....

                            Best,
