Juan Encarnacion's Career Could Be Over...

after taking a foul ball line drive to his left eye:

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion will miss the remainder of the season and his career is in jeopardy after sustaining multiple fractures of his left eye socket when struck by a foul ball Friday night.

Encarnacion was struck while waiting in the on-deck circle in the sixth inning of Friday's game against the visiting Cincinnati Reds. He was about to pinch hit and had no time to react when Aaron Miles was late on a pitch from left-hander Jon Coutlangus.

Encarnacion was down for several minutes, flipping his helmet off his head and bleeding, before two trainers assisted him off the field.

I think he'll be fine after he heals, but it does really suck. I hope his career isn't over. I can't even imaging how Miles feels.

That's just awful. As a Cub fan I hate the Cardinals, but I am pulling for him to be ok and fully recover. I don't wish that on anyone.

I saw this happen... He didn't even react before it hit him. Like he didn't even see it coming even though he was staring right at the ball as it hit him in the face.

Jeez it sounds like it could've been worse. Hopefully he'll make a full recovery and be able to play in the Majors again.

When you think about it, the ball was coming faster than a pitched ball off the bat. I hope he's able to make a full recovery and come back soon.

Yeah, I've always been surprised that more players don't get hit by foul balls being they are so close to home plate and have little time to react.

I wish him the best recovery though and hopefully he can play again.

This is awful. Eye injuries are bad bad news for hitters.

Perhaps it's a matter of speeding up the game but I don't get why the on-deck circle is so close to home plate.

I play semi-pro and they expect us to take warm-up swings about 40 feet from the batter's box. I purposely avoid doing it and just take practice swings as I come to the plate. It's too dangerous and taking a foul ball to the eye is something I already experienced once in my lifetime.

I hope the best for Juan.

in the league i coached in kids had to stand behind the batter...if a righty was up, regardless of where your dugout was, you took your swings in front of the 3B dugout, and in front of the 1B dugout if a lefty was at the plate....

Genius idea. I don't see it happening in the higher levels though. And unfortunately, this type of injury doesn't happen enough in the Majors for them to make any sudden changes to on-deck circles.

Though I am a bit surprised that MLB is considering forcing coaches to wear helmets on the basepaths after the minor league coach's death.
