    David Murphy

Murphy is one of the best young contact hitters I've seen in a long time. For anyone not familiar with him, he was in the Red Sox system (I believe he was one of their top prospects) and was traded along with Kason Gabbard to the Rangers.

In limited play since being with the Rangers he's hitting .417 in 60 ABs. He also has 2 HRs and 10 RBI. He just missed the cycle yesterday and has 3 hits tonight.

Here's a snippet of info from his bio:

In three seasons at Baylor University, hit .346 (230-for-665) with 147 runs, 44 doubles, 22 homers and 142 RBIs in 172 games...was named First-Team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and First-Team All-Big 12 as a junior...hit .413 with 11 homers and 67 RBI, and set a Big 12 Conference record with 121 hits...led the league in batting and finished second with 84 runs and 180 total bases...the second-ranked position player out of the state of Texas by Baseball America, Murphy also posted a .487 on-base percentage and .614 slugging percentage

    Re: David Murphy

He wasn't one of their top prospects, but a mid-level one. He is, as you said, a good contact hitter but power is in short supply. He should be able to serve as a competent fourth outfielder on good teams, and as a fringe starter on weaker teams. He's solid all around and a useful guy to have around, at worst.

1st round pick and not one of their top prospects? Wow, that's crazy.

Just found an article that said he was a top prospect but then he dropped a bit:

Murphy, meanwhile, earned a promotion to Triple A Pawtucket within the last week and socked a two-run homer in his first at-bat, then was robbed of a three-run shot in his second. Murphy, in 177 games at Double A, hit .274 with 42 doubles, 17 homers, and 100 RBIs. But, as he's climbed through the Sox system, his stock has fallen. Before the 2004 season, Baseball America ranked him as the Sox' No. 3 prospect. The publication ranked him 15th before the 2005 season and 12th this year.
Not sure where he ended up before the '07 season but 12-15 is pretty good, IMO.

I could be wrong but I personally think he's better than a 4th OFer. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does next year.

Murphy was considered one of their top prospects when they drafted him, but his stock fell as he moved up. They were expecting more of a power hitter than he ended up being. I'm glad to see he's having success elsewhere. He never would've gotten a shot at the big leagues here. It's always nice to see good guys like him get a chance somewhere while they're still young.

Murphy is picking up where he left off last year. He's hitting right around .500, leading the Rangers in hitting, has 1 HR and a few RBIs already. Yes it's early but I stand by what I said late last year...he is a great contact hitter. I expect to see him hit .300 and maybe even steal 20 bases (he has a couple already this season).

Here's a pretty good article about him: http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/ar...=.jsp&c_id=tex
