The A-Rod contract will be the most ridiculous for a long time, I can't see Santana or Pujols on the open market getting anything more, for the exact reasons you mentioned.

I only caught a part of the report but it was from a finance/business expert that comes on the FAN in Toronto. I believe the analysts are sports business trends folks.

I wouldn't be surprised if his contract gets close to that tho.

I could see the Red Sox offering him $125 million over 5 years. I think they could actually go higher, maybe $30 million a year for five years. They were willing to essentially invest $100+ million in Matsuzaka and clearly have the revenue stream so why not? I could see the Yankees wanting to give him even more than that considering the new ballpark and their desperate need for pitching even with Chamberlin and Hughes.

Edit - Just a reminder, Barry Zito managed to find a team willing to give him $126 million over seven years. Santana will be a rich man if he hits the open market.

And a superior pitcher in Zambrano got $90 million over 5, roughly the same per year, for what it's worth.

That was an extension though, not a free agent contract.

With the Red Sox and Yankees out there and needing pitching, Santana can become a free agent and demand whatever he wants and he will probably get it.

I agree. So long as nothing funny shows up during his physical you're talking about a guy who will be 29 and by far the best pitcher in the league. The Sox have certainly shown they'll pony up for a guy like that and the Yanks will too. Maybe some other insane team will come out and make an even crazier bid.

IDK. Maybe its because I'm an A's fan, but I have a hard time giving large amounts of money to a guy that helps you every fifth day. At least a guy like Arod can help you every game. And I think its been proven that young, cheap pitching is out there. Hell look at the Twins themselves. Lariano is a stud (when he comes back) that is probably making close to the league minimum.

Considering the A's were one of the best teams in baseball for a good stretch this decade because of their pitching, well that seems like an odd statement to me.

My point was that we never broke the bank for a pitcher, we just filled in with young cheap pitching.
